describe
This mod is a follow-up to my Ultra Interior Lighting mod, but for the outside world of Fallout 4.
This module adds more than 1,500 shadow-casting light sources to the physical light sources in the world of "Fallout 4", including Federation, Far Harbor and Nuka World, and generally improves all lighting related to physical light sources, including ambient light and reflected light, bringing a lighting experience that is greatly improved compared to the original game.
Almost all new shadow-casting lights will pass through a trigger box, switching to a non-shadow-casting version when X distance from the player, based on position and other factors.
The use of trigger lights allows for better long-distance lighting and improves performance by preventing shadows from being rendered where they are invisible or too far away to be visually noticeable.
WIP
As of the release of version 1.0, the module is about 80% complete, and I will continue to work on it until I am satisfied with the final product!
Notice
The mod does not change any ambient lighting, such as weather and weather image spaces, nor does it touch vanilla settlement lights - settlements will be covered in a subsequent addon.
For performance reasons, this mod does not add shadow lights to all physical light sources in the game.
This mod does not break any pre-merges or pre-visualizations and has been thoroughly cleaned with FO4edit.
Performance will vary by system, please note that this mod introduces many shadow-casting lights to the outside world of Fallout 4.
You may occasionally see flickering when the light switches between non-shadow-casting and shadow-casting. I'm trying not to make this too obvious, but a switch is better than no switch at all, both in terms of performance and visuals.
Recommended modules
All screenshots are taken when using the Darker Nights mod, which I highly recommend using in conjunction with this mod.
Any ENB, Reshade or SweetFX configuration can improve game contrast.
Any weather mod or higher that makes night weather darker than vanilla.
Prerequisites
This mod requires Nuka World, Far Harbor, Vault-Tec Workshop and Automatron DLC. There will be no non-DLC version, please don't ask!
compatibility
This mod is completely incompatible with any mod that alters existing vanilla physical lights or light sources in the outer worlds of Federation, Far Harbor, and NukaWorld. Edit external cells
Mods should be placed above this cell, unless they change pre-merging or pre-visualization, compatibility is not guaranteed.
Any mod that allows grabbing items in non-vanilla settlements should be done with extreme caution, as ripping out any physical light sources will cause problems.
Non-vanilla settlement mods are fine as long as they don't come into contact with lights or light sources.
Install
Install with Vortex as usual, or simply unzip the archive into your Fallot 4 Data folder!
Loose files are placed in the archive for security reasons to prevent them from being overwritten by other modules.
Advanced users may choose not to install them as they are also present in the BA2 archive.
Users of the Ultra Interior Lighting mod can directly overwrite the module's missing resources, as they are identical to the mod.
uninstall
If you really must uninstall this mod, save your game in an indoor unit before installing. This isn't strictly necessary, but if you don't, any triggered lights will remain there until you leave the area!

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
