Smooth terrain F4
Everyone else is doing it, why can’t we?
Overview: Fallout 4 (actually the Beth game) builds its surrounding terrain from a fairly rough grid. These are often masked by textures, grass and placed objects, but steep slopes will reveal obvious edges and faceted ground.
Smooth Terrain F4 subdivides these terrain meshes on generation and fills new vertices with smooth Catmull-Rom surfaces. Original terrain vertex positions remain accurate, while additional geometry rounds out the ground between them.
Listen, the guys from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim did it, and then someone ported it to New Vegas. So I think we should have that too.
By default, the Adaptive Terrain LOD keeps the configured subdivision level within a small square around the player, using a lower subdivision layer in the ring, and loading the terrain further away remains vanilla. The zone follows the player by tile quadrant rather than by entire unit, with a hysteresis mechanism to prevent it from swinging back and forth near its borders.
Each terrain layer is constructed when the land quadrant is loaded and mounted. Moving between levels only changes the visible levels. The real-time terrain buffer is never rebuilt or replaced.
This is a visual rendering side change. It does not edit landscape records, textures, collisions, navigation meshes, or archive data.
Existing archives can be safely added or removed.
feature
FO4 FOMO is now harder to miss.
Compared with the Skyrim version, some advantages and performance improvements have been added.
It just smoothes the terrain around the player, so the ground in the distance remains cheap
Terrain details are generated when the ground is loaded rather than reconstructed during gameplay
No cracks where different levels of detail meet
No longer bounce back and forth when standing near borders
Up to 64 times the size of the original terrain triangle
Original LAND vertex positions and non-frame attributes remain unchanged
Reconstruct normal, tangent, and landscape vertex data
Configurable smoothing intensity and maximum rise
A single DLL that supports previous and next-gen Fallout 4
Existing archives can be safely added or removed
The LOD of distant terrain is not affected. This difference is most noticeable on nearby slopes, ridges, and uneven terrain.
Prerequisites
PC version of "Fallout 4"
Fallout 4 script extender matches your game runtime
Addressing the library is not required.
The same DLL contains pre-next-gen and next-gen code paths. You don't need a separate mod version for each generation.
Next-gen runtime 1.11.221 has been tested in the game. Pre-gen 1.10.163 support has been implemented and verified against its engine layout, but confirmation from more 1.10.163 users is welcome.
Install
Typically installed using Mod Organizer 2, Vortex, or another mod manager.
When installing manually, the files should be here:
Exit completely and restart Fallout 4 after making configuration changes.

1 Produces 33x33 vertices per quadrant, four times the original triangle count
2 Produces 65x65 vertices per quadrant, 16 times the triangle count of the original
3 Produces 129x129 vertices per quadrant, 64 times the number of triangles in the original
The recommended starting point is Level 1. …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
