SKK Script Lag detector
Suffering from script lag? CC content clogging your tasks? Equip a bell to receive periodic on-screen notifications about script delays.
[Script delay 9.5 seconds 95%]
This is a diagnostic tool not a solution
Feel free to install this mod and give players three Elf-Forged Power Rings: .SKK Script Delay Ring 05 seconds. SKK Script Delay Ring 10 seconds (auto-equip). SKK Script Delay Ring 20 seconds. They will test the potential
The Latency Papyrus Script environment displays messages on the screen (and debug log output) every NN seconds to indicate the load on the game system.
When you investigate the lag, try not to use menus, holotapes and notes as it will cancel the test timer every time you open it as the world will pause.
Remove the ring to stop the test. A spare ring can be made on Chemlab if misplaced and not in stock.
The sweet spot is last, at the bottom of the load order, so it gets the lowest priority to generate worst-case reports.
Papyrus script lag diagnostics
The test starts a script timer for a specified duration. The message on the screen shows the amount of extra time the timer ran and the percentage of the original time that this extra time represented, which represents processing queue - backlog - delay - lag.
Tested with a 10 second timer, a delay of 5.0 seconds means it takes 15 seconds to complete, which is +50% of the time. Note that the Papyrus script subsystem is only allocated a small amount of resources compared to other real-time subsystems, so using tools like the (excellent) Fallout Performance Monitor will not show script resources exceeding commits.
In this type of test, the absolute reported values are interesting, but by themselves they are useless. You need to develop a baseline of acceptable behavior and then compare the results in less-than-stellar gaming experiences to establish problem patterns. Your game may run at 50% script lag, or it may experience choppy results. It's all relative, as Tolstoy advises unhappy families.
Even when running in Zero Mode, the base game script environment ramps up activity as players move, busy cells load while area scans run, and the resident actor AI kicks in. The spike in latency is fine and expected, its continued behavior requires attention.
Determining which mod or script is causing persistent lag is the hard part. If you're on PC, use the debug logs to see what other dumps you have when the persistent lag starts. For Xbox, it's more qualitative: what are you doing, and which of your scripted mods are doing what around the event or location.
Sample debug log output (if enabled):
SKK_SLTMainScript count 1 TimerTime 10.000000 RunTime 13.089001 DeltaTime 3.089001 DeltaPercent 30.890005
SKK_SLTMainScript count 2 TimerTime 10.000000 RunTime 15.100998 DeltaTime 5.100998 DeltaPercent 51.009975
SKK_SLTMainScript count 3 TimerTime 10.000000 RunTime 10.016998 DeltaTime 0.016998 DeltaPercent 0.169983
This is a good profile, plotted in Excel over 24 live minutes, shooting south and then west into busy Academy Square, with 20~40 branches in 5 uGrids with 4-6 radiants.
Known issues
(1) Screen notifications may stop after being in the workbench crafting menu for a long time. Cleared on save and reload.
compatibility
The mod does not rely on extensions or DLC and does not change any base game assets or objects, it is 100% pure new Creation Kit forms and scripts. Remove rings before disabling this mod. Only remove mods if you are happy to accept the potential conflict of load order changes in your save game.
PC manual installation
Copy SKKScriptLatencyTest.esp and SKKScriptLatencyTest - Main.ba2 to your ...\Fallout 4\Data directory, enable it in the Bethesda mod menu, mod manger or whatever.
FAQ
Why is there no ESL version? Because maintaining 30+ scripted mods already involves enough hassle.
Not running this probe will cause more script lag? Possibly, if starting the 10 second timer causes more script lag, y …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
