Preface

This "eternal flame" industry apparently thrived because nuclear war failed to cut off the supply chain of high-quality kerosene, causing these bulbs to burn for 210 years without a single refill. As civilization, government, and basic sanitation collapse, a legendary invisible NPC, apparently the hardest working person in the apocalypse, runs ahead of the lone survivor every day, trimming the wick and lighting up each dungeon before you arrive.

This isn't just luck; this is a guided museum, with each light serving as a subtle hint from the level designers. A light on the table reads "Look at this terminal," a light on the box shouts "Look at this pipe gun," and a light near the sleeping bag is a polite request to "Please sneak up on this guy."

Ultimately, the Creator knew that if Wasteland was truly dark, it would be a horror game. They placed lights every ten feet, ensuring that the Commonwealth looked less like a desolate nightmare and more like a dirty, rusty TGI Friday with "Do Not Touch" signs "Take That Trash." The creators apparently believed that the Marauders had only the survival instincts of a moth, installing devices that resembled tactical target indicators at each camp. It's the ultimate courtesy: a high-contrast silhouette of a chemical addict's head, set against a warm, cozy glow.

Overview

This mod completely replaces all lit oil lamps throughout the Federation, including Original (OG), Next Generation (NG) and Anniversary Edition (AE) versions. It was inspired by the portable light source in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

feature:

Total Replacement: Every electrostatically glowing lamp will be replaced with a functional and desirable replacement. Covers over 1000 lights in the game world.

Light group: handles complex lighting settings. Most light points have an average of 2x and 3x light, but some light sources have more.

Dynamic lighting: Once the oil lamp is removed, all related light sources are illuminated immediately.

Item Management: Each looted lamp will be converted into a standard "Lantern" [MISC:00096A21] item.

Respawn: Once you loot a location, the area remains dark. You are essentially "cleaning" the wasteland's light grid.

Disassembly: Like the original lanterns, these lanterns are fully disassembled in Workshop Mode.

Performance: With active light emitters and shadow casters removed, you may see a slight reduction in twitch calls and engine load in dense areas, but this effect will be most noticeable on mid-range hardware.

In addition to making lights pickupable, this mod also provides lighting fixes for some unstable vanilla light sources. It replaces buggy or static emitters with their correct counterparts:

General: Replaced static oil lamp "OilLamp" [STAT:0008B93A] with OilLamp_Off "Lantern" [MISC:00096A21].

Far Harbor: Fixed missing DLC03LightOilLamp [LIGH:0301A3F3] and DLC03LightOilLamp02 [LIGH:03048C21] replacements.

NukaWorld: Fixed missing DLC04OilLampLight01NSFlicker [LIGH:06046BEC] replacement.

Technical description

Reference Persistence: A very small number of oil lamps are bound to a specific enablement flag (usually for scripted quest events or world state changes). You can still take away these specific lights; however, due to the way the engine handles re …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
