NAF is a new multi-character animation framework similar to AAF but built entirely in F4SE for performance, reliability and new engine-level features.
As a preface, please remember that this is an open beta, which means there may be undiscovered bugs. I've worked out every issue I could find with 2-3 testers, so now it's time to open it up to the public and see how the modders of the world break it.
Function
- Facial Animation: So far, modders have been limited to vanilla facial animation or simple custom facial poses. With NAF's keyframe facial animation system, every facial morph can now be animated, including custom morphs and eye positions.
- Optional Head Morph Patches: Normally, to add custom facial morphs, you have to make .ESP edits for each associated head. But using NAF's patching system, custom deformations can be dynamically injected into all heads of the appropriate type.
- ESP-free animation packs: NAF can dynamically play HKX animations without ESP, freeing up space in your load order for other mods and making animation pack creation simpler for modders.
- No clones: Being native, NAF can create multi-character scenes using actual player characters instead of clones. This allows the scene to start seamlessly without any fade to black, and also allows the animator to use custom camera paths for the scene.
- LookAt Cam: NAF comes with a special switchable camera mode called "LookAt Cam" that locks the camera's view to the player's head or body for a more immersive scene. This camera mode can be turned on for a scene and configured from NAF’s Settings menu.
Powerful XML parser: Using NAF's specially designed XML mapping and caching system, it can load XML files 80 times faster than AAF. Plus, NAF will never fail to start due to bad XML data. If something goes wrong, NAF will ignore it and move on.
- Instant scenes: NAF does not require any time to lock actors. It can instantly pull an actor out of whatever they're doing and into a scene.
- Smooth Sync System: NAF's Smooth Sync system can perfectly synchronize animations between any race by subtly adjusting the speed of individual actors so animation times match. This means perfectly synchronized animations, no matter the situation.
- Adjustable scene animation speed: you no longer need to create completely different animations for different animation speeds. NAF can adjust the scene's animation speed in real time with the click of a button.
- Compatible with existing animation packages: NAF is designed so that animation packages made for AAF can be dropped into NAF and used seamlessly. Copy the XML files into the Data\NAF directory and they should work fine. NAF currently understands the following XML data types: animationData, raceData, positionData, morphSetData, equipmentSetData, actionData, animationGroupData, furnitureData, positionTreeData, and tagData. NAF also added its own faceAnim XML type.
- Built-in Appearance Menu Patch: NAF automatically patches the Appearance Menu to fix morphing issues in v1.6.20 so that morphing works correctly every time.
- Multi-threaded performance: NAF leverages multi-threading to significantly speed up certain operations. It scans the entire loading area for actors and furniture in less than 10 milliseconds.
Animation Studio
NAF's Animation Studio allows you to create full-body animations in the same place they'll end up - in-game. It fully supports inverse kinematics, motion smoothing and multi-character animation. To start using Animation Studio, open the NAF menu and select the "Creator" option, give your project a name, then create a new body animation and select the option to open it in Animation Studio. Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
