Background/Understanding
As far as gameplay goes, I'm actually not a huge Institute fan because I tend to err on the side of overt heroes when I play (too many superhero comics, I guess). But I do like the way the institute is presented in Fallout 4. I particularly like the sense of history you get from them, seeing flashbacks into their past and getting a lot of context for their actions and what led up to their current states with various characters. You can draw a very clear, well-informed line from their origins, as the surviving personnel of CIT, and their current insidious (or "misunderstood," if you prefer) status as the Institute's underground oligarchy. So the Institute is cool to me, but hasn't been a particularly important part of my game for a long time.
Then I saw Niero's totally awesome CROSS_InstituteExpeditionarySuit.
I really like how he incorporated Bethesda's concept art into the game, by depicting the Academy being so wary of the surface world that they would only send agents wearing heavily armored hazmat suits. But obviously the aesthetic was very different from what the Institute has today. So I used Niero's mod and more of Bethesda's concept art (at the top of this description) as a springboard to come up with what I thought members of the Institute might have been at their base back in the day (before they decided what colors to be enemies with).
It's basically a Synth Uniform layout with a color scheme just like the concept art, although I ditched some of the darker blues for more visual style. I gave it a rougher texture and more leather padding. My reasoning is that the institute probably spent some time developing the tools and processes that would allow them to access unlimited resources underground. Given that there wasn't any normal pre-war clothing in this society, which had been almost completely segregated since the bombs were dropped, I imagine they would have had to cannibalize any clothing they salvaged back in the day - made of wool, linen, cotton, etc. - as long as some early director (arbitrary?) decided they would all wear uniforms and make these things. (I know, I come up with too many unnecessary titles. It’s a deep-seated character flaw.
Place
The replacer obviously just replaces all the Synth uniforms so you can get a Synth uniform in place.
The standalone version puts a suit in a cabinet in the personal quarters of a sentimental old guy, what you might call the "child at heart" at the academy. (This is the dad. I'm talking about the dad.) See the pictures to get a better idea of the exact location.
The Institute's synthesizer vendor also has 3 suits that sell you armor and weapons (i.e. not food people). You know, if you want to dress up a companion or whatever.
Install
Select only one master file as they are mutually exclusive. I mean, their changes are the same, so in theory I guess you could use both and they just do the same thing when ESP overrides ESL, but... why? Basically, ESL is the "real" main file, because if your load order is as crowded as mine, this mod is small and ESL is a godsend. The ESP option is for those who need to put it into a specific load order, are using an older game version or a mod manager that doesn't support ESL, or just don't like ESL for whatever reason (for each of them they have; I don't know about your life).
I made the replacer an optional file because you can use it alone to replace all Synth Uniforms, or you can use it with either of two independent options to replace Synth Uniforms and get the free version from world placement.
No matter which option you choose, they are all simple 7zip archives with appropriate file structure. You can choose to install any download manually by extracting the contents into the FO4/Data folder, or you can use almost any of FO4's mod managers to do this for you. (Personally, I recommend the latter because A) it's more efficient, B) …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
