About this mod Machine translation

This mod edits all unit lighting data and templates to darken the ambient light and fog brightness of all interiors by 60%, without touching any directional lights, keeping the lighting 100% true to vanilla except for those dark corners and unlit areas. The subway is actually dark and scary! This is something I made for myself and use all the time, but I thought I'd share. This really gives directional lights (i.e. fixtures) a chance to shine (literally!)

This is not a post-processing filter, contrast adjustment, or other workaround that affects the overall screen brightness levels you may experience. Every interior unit in the game (282 in total) has been directly altered to reduce ambient light by 60%, but all placed lights, such as candles, lanterns, bulbs, etc., are 100% unaffected. In fact, many common interiors look the same because they do so well in direct light sources. That's the goal, this only works for those areas with no light and dark corners.

If you're familiar with Skyrim's Enhanced Lights and FX Enhancer options, it's the same approach.

The end result is that the lighting feels more realistic, and by cutting out some of the ambient light that Bethesda likes to use with its interiors, the direct lighting has a chance to shine on its own (no pun intended) and everything has a bit more color and looks richer. Opinions may differ, I'll live with that :)

As for the fog, this mod doesn't remove the fog, or "push it away" like some mods do, it just reduces the amount of light affecting the fog. That said, the fog is still there, it's only 60% darker to match the drop in ambient light.

This may not be for everyone - and that's fine! - I played it on a very bright HDTV and made it for myself and it added so much that I wish I would have done it before going on my first playback.

Will this cause any compatibility issues with other internal cell modes?

Issues such as unit reset errors only persist in external world space locations, i.e. settlement and are not internal issues. However, an issue was discovered a few months ago with how the Fallout 4 engine used precombined meshes and precomputation. These are generated in CK for performance, and that data is stuffed into the main unit record. This means that if two mods edit the same cell, that data can get overwritten and become out of sync, sometimes causing things like objects or walls to flicker or disappear. This isn't a problem, but as more interior renovations are coming, it's something to be aware of. It doesn't always happen, but if a mod makes a lot of changes (like Better Third Rail), it can.

Okay, that's cool, but how do I fix this if it happens?

This is rare, but the easiest way is to simply place the internal mod experiencing this issue under Internal Enhancements. For example, Elianora's Prydwen Quaters. You will lose that cell's lighting changes unless you open the mod in FO4Edit and drag my lighting data into that mod, but it's better than a disappearing wall! Keep in mind that if you see this, it's probably not this mod's fault. Doing something as simple as leaving a bottle of Nuka-Cola on the counter can trigger the same problem, so make sure you thoroughly test which mods are conflicting or you'll lose your mind with load order. Please feel free to post in the comments asking for specific help with combinations of mods. Being immersed in supreme darkness is important to me :D

How does this compare to other mods, namely FR4NSSON's Thin and Light?

(Just mentioning this mod by name because it's been asked a lot!)

This is a bit hard to explain: other mods currently don't edit the actual light output data, but rather what's called "image space", which are the game's post-processing filters that apply to the entire image/screen and control specific aspects such as bloom, contrast, etc. This will have an impact on the overall image. What Fr4nsson's Light Tweaks do with Ambient Light is darken exterior sunlight values (such as those you'd typicall …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
