As shown in the picture, TactaGhoul’s old HK CAWS shotgun first appeared in Fallout 2 and is considered a big killer in the mid-term. (Although Bozar is actually more famous) Someone happened to have Chineseized it recently, so I posted it conveniently.

story
In 1982, the U.S. military launched the Close Assault Weapon System program, an effort to develop a new combat shotgun with significantly greater range and firepower than the standard-issue Remington 870. The program grew out of an earlier JSSAP program called RHINO, led by Carroll Childers. After the Vietnam War and the British military's involvement in the Malayan Emergency, the military decided to focus on improving the close-range firepower of its soldiers. Childers' goal was to create a 12-gauge shotgun with an effective range of up to 150 meters that would be faster, more powerful, and easier to control than traditional military lead shotguns. Childers also specified a magazine capacity of 10 rounds, a weight of less than 4kg, armor-piercing rounds, and a redesigned casing that were incompatible with commercial 12-gallon shells, but the gun itself had to be backwards compatible with standard lead bullets. Throughout the 1980s, several companies submitted shotgun designs to CAWS. HK developed the Bulldog shotgun seen here, Pancor developed the Jackhammer, AAI developed a shotgun based on the M16, and Atchisson submitted the AA-12. Due to financial problems, Pancor withdrew from the trial and HK's entry would eventually win the trial against other designs. However, the CAWS program was deemed unnecessary and closed in the late 1980s, leaving Hong Kong CAWS in the prototype stage.
Mechanics in Forgotten Weapons
Ian hasn't seen CAWS yet, so I had to dig up all the information below from primary sources about how it works.
The HK CAWS is a gas-assisted, recoil-operated, select-fire bullfighting combat shotgun with a recoil-reducing mechanism. It was designed by a team of German engineers led by Helmut Weldle, who also worked on the HK USP, HK P7, HK G36 and HK VP70. The ergonomic design was based on the HK G11 which was also being developed at the time. The gun was designed in November 1982 and patented on December 4, 1985 (I actually managed to dig up the patent here: The patent goes into great detail about how the mechanism works, but I'll summarize it here:
The action can best be described as a hybrid between long-recoil operation and short-recoil operation, or what I call a "constant floating recoil" system. When the gun fires, the barrel moves rearward with the bolt and bolt carrier, but they are not securely locked together throughout the entire travel. Unlike a traditional rotating bolt, the force to unlock it comes from the recoil spring itself, not air pressure or inertia. The spring tension on the barrel is greater than the spring tension on the bolt carrier, and the barrel is decelerated by the brake assembly so that initially the two parts move rearward together and are locked by spring tension and momentum. However, the bolt is allowed to move rearward slightly faster than the barrel, so the bolt unlocks as it and the barrel move rearward, and eventually the gap increases enough for the case to eject. There is no rigid stop on the barrel or bolt, instead it is gradually slowed down by a spring. Once the bolt assembly reverses direction, a new cartridge is picked up and fed into the chamber, at which point the two lock together again and return to the battery. The system required a precise amount of applied recoil to balance the spring tension, so Weldle devised a self-regulating gas system that would push the mechanism back if a lower-powered shell was used. There is a gas port a few inches below the barrel that vents gas into the tube, and the …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
