*This mod is my love letter to Fallout 3, the game that introduced me to my favorite franchise of all time. The atmosphere, the bleakness, the weirdness, that vomit green filter, and that sense of "what's going to be fun and scary in the next area" were all things I loved about that game. In this month of the game’s anniversary, I wanted to share a little bit about Fallout 4. *
The most organic way to experience this mod is to install it and play. The mission does not start immediately, but is triggered after you find one of the clue notes scattered throughout the Commonwealth. If you find enough unique clues, the mission will update to start tracking the monsters on your map.
Even if the mission has not started, monsters are still present in the world. It is possible to encounter it without starting the mission. Entering combat with it will also start the quest. Once the monster dies, the mission will be completed with the XP awarded, regardless of how you started it.
This monster is designed for late-game combat, and it mainly roams areas that players won't visit until later in the campaign. Some of the clues needed to track it can also be found in late-game areas, so there's little risk in installing this mod on a new playthrough.
Minimal spoilers:
The earliest way to start the quest in the game is to find one of these flyers in Concord, but there are many copies of this flyer scattered throughout the towns/cities throughout the game.
Other clues are unique. You need at least three unique clues to track monsters on your map (the above flyer counts as one). These are mostly located in places you're likely to visit during the main campaign, so keep an eye on your notes and read the terminal entries.
As monsters wander large areas of the map, it's possible to encounter monsters organically without collecting all the clues. Encountering it this way will still advance the quest and allow it to be completed. It moves slowly and is easy to spot if you're nearby, so keep an eye out.
Walkthrough/Major Spoilers:
Monsters roam a large area in the southwestern part of the map. The area is large enough that it can be difficult to find (intentionally) just by wandering around looking for it, but it can be done this way.
To track a monster onto your map so you can find it easily, you'll need at least three of four unique clues to get the mission to that stage. The clues and locations are as follows:
Beware the flyers: there are dozens of copies in densely populated areas (only the first one you read counts towards the mission):
Diamond City - multiple internal cells, also located in several locations
Of the main outer cells GoodNeighbor - has the most, some in the inner cells, but also a few lying in the rubble/alleys
Zhongmengyue - Trash cans outside the main entrance, Mayor's Palace
There is also one within Concord - two located on the Gateway to Liberty
Among the different buildings along the main road leading to the museum terminal entrance: An additional entry has been added to the Entertainment Terminal in the lower main area of Prydwen (the last entry in the list).
Raider Notes: On a table inside the Roadside Pines Motel. Fighting …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
