About this mod Machine translation
This plugin for Fallout 4 adds the ability to dynamically control shadow draw distance based on the desired user-defined fps.
Many of you may have noticed that at some points in Fallout 4 fps even with good hardware the fps drops, like in New York City, most of it happens in
Areas with many objects. Because the game isn't properly optimized, almost everything it does with the objects it renders takes a lot longer
It actually should. One of the most time-consuming operations in Fallout 4 is shadow rendering, since the game only has predefined shadow extraction
Distance, works for every place anywhere and we have a choice either we set it to a high value but have a good picture but
Eventually facing fps drops in locations with a lot of objects, or we lower the value to make fps generally more stable. that's exactly the point
This plugin comes in handy!
Install
- Copy ShadowBoost.asi and ShadowBoost.ini to the game's main folder, where Fallout4.exe is located.
- In order to load the asi plugin, you need to install the asi loader, so copy the Fallout 4 asi loader (xinput1_3.dll) from this ditrib to the main game folder.
Tweak
The settings in ShadowBoost.ini are very simple
fTargetFramerate - your desired fps, the shadow draw distance will be adjusted smoothly until the game fps meets this value. If you are using vsync or fps lock, you must set this value to a few fps (2 to 5) lower than the actual fps limit, otherwise boost may treat the locked fps as balancing itself and stop increasing the draw distance
fDistChangeSpeed - distance change speed, safe range from 0.5 to 5.0, default = 1.0
fShadowDrawDistMin - Minimum value for shadow draw distance, it will never be set lower than this value in game, default = 2000.0
fShadowDrawDistMax - the maximum shadow draw distance, it will never exceed this value in the game, default = 15000.0
x360ce
If you are using the x360 controller emulator library with Fallout 4, you will need to rename it to x360ce.dll in order to load it.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
