What does this do?

This mod will store (and optionally memory map) unzipped BA2 files as you play. This allows the game to skip decompression and read the file directly on subsequent loads, thus shortening load times.

How to use

Install mod

Play games and your cache will fill up

Enjoy faster file copying

Please note: This module will store your unzipped BA2 files in \Data\F4SE\Plugins\FasterFileCopyFO4_cache. By default, full cache is enabled and limited to 5GB. You can adjust this value in ini. Allocating more disk space will bring more improvements. Limiting cache mode to only boot time reduces the required disk space (60MB on my system), but only improves load times at boot, not in-game.

You can adjust the disk space available to the module and enable statistics logging and memory mapping in the FasterFileCopyFO4.toml file in the Mod dir.

To further speed up loading, you can also try

The default INI settings are:

[Universal]

Master Switch — disable plugins but don’t uninstall them

bEnabled = true

Baseline mode - the hook is installed, but all reads go through the original ReadFile.

Run once, run once, run once, compare load times in logs.

bBaselineMode = false

Log QPC timing decomposition and periodic statistics BA2Mmap.log

bEnableStats = false

Stats thread log interval (milliseconds)

iStatsIntervalMs = 5000

Log every read (extremely verbose, debugging only)

bLogReads = false

[Archives]

Place the memory mapped archive file into the process address space.

false = cache mode only (uncompressed entries are not read in mmap mode,

Only decompose cache service compressed entries)

bEnableMmap = false

[DecompCache]

Persistent decompression cache - stores pre-decompression BA2 data to disk.

First run: Build buffer from engine reducer output.

Next run: serve pre-decompressed data directly, bypassing zlib completely.

Compatible with FastDecompress.dll (the hook is in the inflation layer).

bEnabled = true

0 = startup only (cache is built on initial load, refreshed once)

1 = Start + Game (cache grows during game play, refreshed once in the background)

iMode = 1

Maximum total cache size in MB (0 = unlimited).

The oldest cached files will be evicted first when the limit is exceeded.

iMaxMB = 5000

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
