★ About ★
In the original game, player dialogue required exactly four response options—the game wouldn't accept any more, and it wouldn't accept any less. The system also focuses most conversations into four types: yes, no, neutral, and question. As you can imagine, conversations don’t always fall neatly into these categories!
The Extended Dialog Interface (XDI) is a community framework that removes the hard-coded 4-option limit in dialogue and adds engine support for any number of player dialogue options.
mold
Groups can now create new conversation experiences that emphasize player agency and have conversation options that truly reflect player intent.
XDI itself will not modify the original dialogue, but will display the full text of the original dialogue.
Interestingly, in several of the original scenes, Bethesda recorded additional dialogue options themselves! In many cases, these devices are not wired correctly to support XDI (no relevant responses, etc.), so they cannot be turned on globally. However, modders can modify these vanilla dialogue scenes so that they connect correctly, exposing additional voice-acted dialogue that is already in the base game.
★ Features ★
Full conversation text. Be completely sure of what you're going to say and review your dialogue options.
Dialogue prompts. Optionally display a question icon for dialogue options that do not advance the conversation. No more making choices unintentionally when you just want more information. A door icon appears next to the option to end the conversation.
Flexible conversation options. Modders: Have less than four sentences to say? Just two options, or add as many options as you like.
No player sounds, no problem. Skyrim and New Vegas don’t have voice actors either! XDI solves this problem with engine modifications. For voiceless player dialogue, the NPC dialogue starts immediately after the option is selected. The dialogue camera has been hot-patched to maintain focus on the NPC, rather than (in the original version) staring at the player's motionless mouth. No more awkward pauses.
Can be configured via MCM. XDI comes with its own MCM menu for easy configuration.
No tricks. These changes are integrated into the engine - no workarounds, "blank voice files", patched STRINGS files, etc. are required.
★ Who is using XDI? ★
XDI is proud to provide dialogue rights for the following large-scale mission mods in development:
Fallout: Cascadia (official website, Discord)
Fallout 4: New Vegas ()
Fallout 4: Capital Wasteland (official website)
Fallout 4: E Pluribus Unum (official website)
★ Installation ★
Install using your favorite mod manager, or copy the file from the download to your Fallout 4 data folder and activate XDI.esm.
Make sure you start the game with the F4SE loader.
If an error occurs that the XDI plug-in is not loaded, make sure you have F4SE installed and running!
Install
When using XDI, make sure there is no DialogueMenu.swf file in your Data\Interface folder. This file is provided in XDI's BA2 archive. Any loose interface files in this folder will be processed first and overwrite XDI's files.
★ Requirements: ★
Fallout 4 game version 1.10.50.
Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE), 0.6.0 and above.
If you want to configure XDI within the game, it is highly recommended
Use the Mod configuration menu (1.2 or higher). Alternatively, you can manually modify the XDI INI file.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
