Technical discussion

Exterior cells are not initialized at startup, like most other game objects,

instead they are loaded at runtime, when the player is near them.

To quickly find said cells, the engine, every since (presumably) Oblivion,

uses something called cell offset data.

It tells the game where cells are located inside each individual plugin.

If not present, the engine has to effectively search through your entire loadorder for a given cell,

which can be really performance intensive, especially if you have many mods that add/edit cells.

The problem is that they have to be generated using the Creation Kit's version control system,

which no soul on earth uses.

The tool xEdit even completely strips cell offset data from plugins on save.

And even if you do all the effort to create them,

the engine won't load them for non-master plugins.

This mod solves all of that by generating missing cell offset data at startup for all loaded plugins,

while also allowing non-master plugins to actually have them loaded by the engine.

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between this module and Faster Cell Lookup?

A: My mod has been developed and sitting on the system for a few months, so it's a pity that a similar mod was released a few days ago. The main difference is probably that my mod is completely handmade, doesn't rely on any AI or large language models, and also includes a custom loading menu.

Notes to mod developers

You can include pre-generated unit offset files with your module,

This way users don't need to generate these files themselves.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
