Introduction:

Imagine standing outside a building and there is an explosion inside.

You wouldn’t expect it to sound the same as when you stand next to it. Walls, floors, and other obstructions naturally change the way sound travels, helping you understand what's happening without seeing the event.

In Fallout 4, this sense of separation is often missing. Many explosions, gunshots, voices, and other sounds remain clear even if there are several walls or even an entire building between you and the source of the sound. Acoustic occlusion restores that missing layer of immersion by evaluating the environment before supported sounds reach the player.

it

Rather than simply lowering the volume, determine the space between you and the sound source and calculate how much sound should actually get through.

It even supports material detection. Dense surfaces like concrete or steel emit sound more easily than lightweight materials like wood or glass, resulting in more natural audio transitions.

Whether you hear a gunfight behind a wall, a radio blaring in a room, or an explosion on the other side of a building, sound now feels connected to the world around it, rather than ignoring it.

This world doesn't just look believable.

This finally sounds believable.

Known limitations

Acoustic masking relies on Fallout 4's Havok collision data to determine whether sounds are blocked by walls and other objects.

Some visible surfaces only use render geometry, or have incomplete collision data, meaning they cannot be detected as sound barriers. In this case, the sound may be less muffled than expected.

This is a limitation of the game's collision data, not an issue with the mod itself.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
