VegvisirCompass
Loot a compass from a Vegvisir instead of a map pin. Boss compasses are limited-use. Mörkhalla's bottom ice drops one you can read anywhere to find the Jotun invasion. For no-map servers.

Vegvísir Compass
A BepInEx mod for Valheim, built for no-map
multiplayer playthroughs.
Interacting with a Vegvísir no longer reveals the boss on your map. Instead you
loot a Vegvísir Compass — a limited-use item that swings your view toward
the boss that stone points at, then crumbles once it is spent.
What it does
- Interacting with a Vegvísir grants a Vegvísir Compass instead of revealing
a map location.
- Each compass is named for its target — Vegvisir Compass - Moder — so you
can tell at a glance which boss it points at.
- Stones can optionally go on a shared cooldown afterwards, applying to every
player on the server. Off by default.
- A player may carry only one compass per target — holding one for The Elder
does not stop you looting one for The Queen, but a second Elder compass is
refused. Targets are matched by location, not by the displayed name, so stones
sharing a label (such as the Ashlands Dyrnwyn chain) never block each other.
The rule applies to picking one up off the ground as well as looting, so a
compass cannot be duplicated by dropping it first. Compasses are not swept up by
auto-pickup; press use to take one.
- Using the compass points the camera at the boss. It has a single use by default,
and is destroyed once spent.
- A compass only works within 350m of the Vegvísir it came from, measured on
the X/Z plane so height is ignored. Out of range costs nothing: no use is
spent and the camera does not move.
- Aiming turns you to face the boss and levels the view on the horizon, rather
than tilting up a mountain or down into a valley.
- A 1 second guard stops a double-keypress burning two uses at once.
- A stone naming several places grants one compass for each — Hildir's map
table is a Vegvísir carrying all three of her quest dungeons. Targets you
already carry are skipped rather than refusing the whole stone.
- Merchant lorestones: biome runestones far enough from the world centre also
grant a compass — Black Forest → Haldor, Meadows and Plains → Hildir, Swamp →
the Bog Witch, Mountains → the Forge of Potential. The stone still shows its
lore text.
- Hildir's map table grants compasses for her three quest dungeons, named
Brass, Silver and Bronze.
- Merchants settle where you trade with them, not at the first camp anyone
walks past. The Forge of Potential settles when you open it, the same way.
New worlds only (or worlds the mod has managed from the start).
- Icons are coloured by what they point at, so a full pack stays readable at
a glance: gold for bosses, grey for merchants, red for Ashlands Mysterious
Locations, purple for Hildir's quest dungeons, ice-blue for the Forge of
Potential.
The map is never touched. See No map, really for why that
needed care.

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin
- The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
- Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
- Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
- Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.
Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
Install these first, or the mod will not work:
