Sled on your equipped shield.

About this mod Author’s original text

Shield Sledding

Slide down hills on your equipped shield. Jump, press Mouse4 to arm (in the air or right after takeoff), then land to start sledding. Speed follows the slope; Blocking sets your max per shield ([ShieldCoastSpeeds] Skill0→Skill100). Defaults: wood 18→25 m/s; best board (Nord Greatshield) 28.8→40 at Blocking 100.

Valheim 1.0 / Deep North boards are included: Nord Shield, Nord Buckler, and Nord Greatshield. Ice sheets and floes are faster and slipperier than snow. Sledding through Deep North powder leaves the same compacted trail as walking.

Works in multiplayer. Everyone playing needs the mod installed.

Optional: WoodRamps adds buildable wood ramps for custom sled runs. Not required.

Install with r2modman

  • Install r2modman.
  • Pick Valheim and open the Default profile.
  • Install BepInExPack Valheim if it is not already there.
  • Either:
  • Search for Shield Sledding and install it, or
  • Settings → Import local mod and pick dist\ShieldSledding-1.1.1.zip.

Manual install

  • Install BepInExPack Valheim.
  • From the Release folder, copy the ModdedWolf-ShieldSledding folder into Valheim:

Valheim\BepInEx\plugins\ModdedWolf-ShieldSledding\

You should end up with:

Valheim\BepInEx\plugins\ModdedWolf-ShieldSledding\ShieldSledding.dll

  • Launch Valheim through BepInEx (Steam with the BepInEx launcher, or whatever you normally use).

Config shows up after the first run at:

BepInEx\config\ModdedWolf.ShieldSledding.cfg

How to use it

  • Equip a shield that still has durability (drawn in hand — sheathed does not count).
  • Jump on purpose — walking off a cliff without pressing jump does not count.
  • Press your ActivationKey while airborne or right after takeoff (default Mouse4, changeable in config). In-game hints always show the key you have set. Without a shield equipped, the key does nothing.
  • Land to start sledding. By default any ground works; raise MinimumSlope in config if you want steeper hills only.

Valheim 1.0 uses G for a vanilla action, so the default sled bind is Mouse4. Existing configs that were still on G are migrated automatically; a custom bind is kept.

Controls while sledding

| Key | What it does |

|-----|----------------|

| A / D | Steer (screen left/right; InvertSteering / CameraRelativeSteering in config) |

| W | Lean forward, small speed boost (ground or water only) |

| S | Brake (ground or water only) |

| Space | Jump — you stay in sled mode |

| ActivationKey | Arm in the air after a jump; quit sledding (in-game hints show this key) |

| Esc | Quit sledding |

Sled audio is one toggle under [Effects]: EnableSoundEffects (slide, wind, and impact together).

Sledding ends if you press your activation key or Esc, get hit by a creature or player, sink in deep water (too slow to skim), die, or your shield breaks from wear. At 6 m/s or faster you can skim across water instead of swimming.

Combat & damage while sledding

| Hit type | What happens |

|----------|----------------|

| Falls and impacts | No health loss — damage goes to shield durability instead |

| Creature or player attack | Knocked off the sled, staggered, no health loss |

While armed (after the activation key, before landing), hits are blocked with no shield wear — you stay on your feet.

Configurable in ModdedWolf.ShieldSledding.cfg under [Damage]: AbsorbDamageToShield, EndSledOnCombatHit, StaggerOnCombatHit.

Shield wear & speed (defaults)

Hard max speeds by shield and Blocking skill (m/s). Slope physics free below the cap. Edit under [ShieldCoastSpeeds] as Prefab_Skill0 / Prefab_Skill100. Wear is durability drain while sledding (lower = lasts longer).

| Shield | Wear | Max @ Blocking 0 | Max @ Blocking 100 |

|--------|------|--------------------|----------------------|

| Wood | 6.00× | 18.0 | 25.0 |

| Wood tower | 5.60× | 18.5 | 25.8 |

| Bronze buckler | 3.50× | 19.1 | 26.5 |

| Bone tower | 4.20× | 19.6 | 27.3 |

| Iron buckler | 0.80× | 20.2 | 28.0 |

| Banded | 2.00× | 20.7 | 28.8

Install & use Install: BepInEx plugin

  1. The archive from playbuff is the mod itself — usually a BepInEx plugin (a .dll or a plugin folder once unzipped).
  2. Recommended: use a community mod manager (such as r2modman) — pick this game, import the mod, and the manager sets up BepInEx and its dependencies for you.
  3. Manual route: install the BepInEx loader in the game folder, then drop the unzipped .dll or plugin folder into BepInEx/plugins/.
  4. Launch the game — the BepInEx console logs every plugin it loads; seeing this mod in the log means it is installed.

Mods with listed dependencies need those installed too, or they will not load. Options are usually changed in-game or in the plugin's config file. In multiplayer, the host and every client need the same mods installed.
