Sound editing tools for The Witcher 3

usage:

Use QuickBMS to extract the game's soundspc.cache file to a custom folder and provide the witcher3.bms script there (this file supports 64-bit files used by Blood and Wine).

Use the official mod tool or QuickBMS to decompress the game's XML file.

Open "soundbanksinfo.xml" with a text editor and find the sound ID and sound bank of the sound you want to replace (make sure you write them all down).

Create a new clean WAVE (wav) file for the sounds you want to add to your game. Must be 16 bits or larger, uncompressed and without hint blocks.

Run prepare_wave.py to prepare WAVE for Wwise.

Open Wwise, create a new project, change project settings/sources to Vorbis High, import the prepared WAVE and convert all audio files.

Go to the Wwise project folder/.cache and copy all new WEM files to the folder.

Run compare_wem.py for each WEM file (comparing them to the original WEM files from The Witcher 3) and answer "yes" to the request to merge headers.

Copy all merged files to an empty folder and remove ".merged" from the name.

Use rebuild_soundbank.py to rebuild the sound bank.

Copy all rebuilt soundbanks to the above mentioned folder, removing .rebuilt from the name.

Run create_sounds_cache.py on the folder containing the modified files (.wems and .bnks).

Apply the newly generated soundspc.cache to <The Witcher 3 Folder>/Mods/modMyMod/content.

Warning: If your .wem file is for sound rather than music, do not package the .wem file in a .sys file. The sounds are embedded in the sound bank itself. Packing the .wem files won't cause any problems, but it will increase the overall size of soundspc.cache (the sound files will be included twice, one as a separate .wem file and one embedded in the sound library).

Example:

Replace all Gwent songs with new ones: This is a simple batch script that automatically rebuilds soundbanks with multiple soundbanks/voices. Sound:Music: Just put the sound library into the folder bnks and the sounds into the folder. To reconstruct the sound library for sounds rather than music, use:

Sound IDs: 552019, 3961972, 9131862, 10122256 and 13090987

Soundbanks: music_kaer_morhen, music_misty_island, music_nomansgrad, music_prologue, music_skellige, music_wyzima_castle

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
