A set of files and instructions to help GOTY owners resolve 1.30 compatibility issues.
Since we currently have players (and modmakers) with two different versions of the game - 1.30 (mainly Steam) and 1.31 GOTY (GOG GOTY) - there have been many reports of compatibility issues as well as mod update requests for the latest patch. The problem is - there is no "latest patch" and many modmakers don't have a 1.31GOTY version. So here are some explanations, instructions and documentation to solve the problem without copying every mod. At least until we get an official answer from CDPR whether we get a unified patch for all versions of the game.
So, let's get started.
- Who needs this.
Players who own the 1.31 GOTY game version and use the 1.30 version mods. Even if you don't have script compilation errors, you may still need it because 1.30 mods may overwrite 1.31 GOTY specific changes that you may want to keep. This file is not required if you are using texture models without the script module. Update: The current non-GOTY version of the game (both Steam and GOG) is 1.31, the changes from 1.30 are minimal and all 1.30 mods will still work on the 1.31 version of the game. The Steam GOTY version is a bundle(!) and not the actual 1.31 GOTY version, despite the greeting message in the main menu! So, if you buy it on GOG, you only own the 1.31 GOTY version of the game, which is called GOTY (the default installation folder under GOG Library is named "The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt GOTY").
- You can downgrade the script to version 1.30 of the game and forget about the whole process.
To do this, download "Base 1.30 scripts", unzip and copy the "scripts" folder into the "<Path To The Witcher 3>\content\content0\" folder. If you have
There is "scripts" folder under this exact path, please delete it after copying and unzipping.
- What do you lose if you decide to downgrade to 1.30?
You will loose the random main menu (can be compensated by installing optional main menu mode), language packs directly from the in-game menu. If these options are not relevant to you, downgrading to 1.30 is your best option.
- How to keep the 1.31GOTY version while using 1.30 mods.
Start by downgrading the base script to 1.30 (see item 2 above). The script merge is required to automatically merge all files correctly, but in the end you will still get the correct 1.31 GOTY version. Then download the "modGOTYDiffFiles" file and install it into the "<Path To The Witcher 3>\Mods" folder (either manually or using NMM). Use the script merge (highly recommend downloading the latest version if you haven't updated in a while) and use it to merge modGOTYDiffFiles with your installed 1.30 mods.
- Do not mix 1.30 and 1.31GOTY modules.
You have a choice whether to use the "unofficial" 1.31 GOTY update of existing 1.30 mods or use the original mod released by its author, as well as this approach, but keep in mind that mixing mods from different game versions is never a good idea and can lead to weird merge conflicts and/or weird in-game glitches.
- Some 1.30 modules are incompatible with the 1.31GOTY version.
Most 1.30 mods will be fully automatically merged with Script Merger, no need to manually resolve conflicts. But some other mods are completely incompatible with the 1.31 GOTY game version as they require code rewriting for the new conditions - mods like optional main menu. But this is a rare case as not that many mods rewrite the main menu code. Also, please pay attention to specific instructions posted by mod authors on their mod pages or in the comments section.
- After installing modGOTYDiffFiles, you may not see any conflicts in the script merge
This is normal and indicates that the mod you are using does not change any GOTY related scripts and is compatible with GOTY and works out of the box.
- If you are using Ghost mode......... do not merge the definitionsManager.ws file in modGOTYDiffFiles with the one in GM: GOTY changes are not required in GM and the …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
