What does this MOD do?
The goal of this mod is to bring (within a certain scope) realistic seamanship into the game. You can no longer speed up and slow down manually, instead the boat will automatically advance and stop based on the boat's position and the correct angle of the sail to the wind.
How MOD works
-MOD is off by default. To enable it, open the mod menu.
- Use q on the boat to enter realistic sailing mode. (Remap keys using default menu)
- Back and forth movement keys changed to "Sheet Sail In" (default on S) and "Sheet Sail Out" (default on W).
-The boat health HUD module was changed to reflect the wind relative to the boat's position. Make sure you have the ship health HUD enabled!
-Added option to sail using Ingme winds.
What do I mean by reality sailing?
Basically it goes like this: the speed (and likelihood) of sailing depends on the direction of the wind, the position of the boat, and the position of the sails on the boat.
In fact, a square sailboat like the original ship (yes, not like the E3 preview version) will sail like a raft, which is to say, difficult to maneuver and only really making progress when the wind is behind you.
Modern ships (and some ancient ones, such as the Egyptian longboat or the Norman longboat) are easier to maneuver, but only up to a point. If you look at the picture below, there is a no-go zone around the direction of where the wind is coming from, where you cannot sail directly. This is impossible, to go in this direction you have to zigzag, "close-drag" on one side (B in the picture) and, after a while, cross to the other side.
In the mod: If you let the sail go loose, the sail will move automatically, or turn the boat the way it should. Otherwise, you have to put it in (keyboard s) or move it out (w). This affects the speed of the ship (as shown in the image below). The position of the sail is optimal with respect to speed. If you slide in or out, the boat will slow down. Note that if the wind is behind you (D and E), you always move forward.
Install
- Place the modRealisticSailing folder in the mods folder of the w3 directory.
- mod menu: Place the bin folder in the w3 directory. (If the modrealisticsailingconfig.xml file is located in modrealisticsailingconfig.xml\bin\config\r4game\user\uconfig\umatrix\pc, then the installation menu.)
- keybinds 1: Go to \bin\config\r4game\user\uconfig\umatrix\pc and find the input.xml file. Copy and paste the lines above the existing lines in the input.xml.part.txt file in this mod.
- Keybinding 2: Go to Documents\Switches 3 and find the input.settings file. Copy and paste the lines above the existing lines in the input.xml.part.txt file in this mod.
-Run script merge.
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
