WaterDepthOverlay

🎣 **A visual aid module to help you find the best fishing spots**

✨ Module introduction

Inspired by fishing strategies, I decided to implement the visual effects of fishing areas in the game.

---

🌊 What is the fishing area/water depth?

Each water tile is assigned a fishing area level of 0, 1, 2, 3 or 5, which controls various aspects of fishing. **The farther away from the land (in all directions), the better the area level. **

Higher fishing area levels provide the following **benefits**:

  • Chance of catching trash reduced
  • Fish size and quality (e.g. Normal, Silver Star, Gold Star) are better on average
  • The chance of catching more difficult fish is slightly increased

For ease of understanding, the fishing area level is called "**Water Depth**" in this module.

---

🎮 How to use

Press the **OemQuotes** key (configurable) to enable/disable overlay drawing.

**Note:** The overlay will only be drawn if the current map **has at least one fishable water tile** and the player's **current tool** is a fishing rod.

---

⚙️ Configuration menu

Players can **customize** the overlay color of water tiles in the **Configuration Menu UI** of the module and preview the mixed color.

**Ginger Island configuration menu example:**

**Crater configuration menu example:**

Additionally, you can paint overlays on non-fishable tiles if you like.

Even if a tile appears to be a body of water, players will not be able to fish there if it is blocked by a building (e.g. bridge, house, shore). This module calls it **Unfishable Tiles**.

---

🆕 New features

**As of version 1.0.2:** The water depth overlay no longer obscures player sprites by default.

A switch named "**Draw on top**" has been added to the menu UI, which is turned off by default.

If you turn it on, the water depth overlay will be drawn on top of the game world. This way, the overlay will obscure the rendered game world, including player sprites.

**Small trade-off:** In the default configuration, you cannot see the fishpond overlay. If you want to see it, turn on the "Draw on top" switch, but then the water depth overlay will obscure the player sprite again.

📊 Example comparison

Here's a comparison of the fishing areas manually edited (possibly) and drawn in the game:

**Manual editing example (from Wiki):**

  • Mine 20th floor
  • Mountainous areas

**In-game drawing example of this module:**

  • Danger on level 20 of the mine
  • Mountainous areas

Install & use Install: SMAPI mod (Stardew Valley standard)

  1. Install SMAPI first (Stardew Valley's mod loader): download it from smapi.io, run 'install on Windows.bat' and pick your game folder.
  2. Unzip the archive from playbuff and find the folder that contains manifest.json — that folder is the mod.
  3. Copy that whole folder into Stardew Valley/Mods/.
  4. Launch the game through SMAPI (run StardewModdingAPI.exe or set it as the launch option). The console before the title screen lists each mod's load result.

Cheat-style tools may not need SMAPI — unzip and run them as the readme describes. Back up your save before editing it; SMAPI lists failed mods in its console.
