Volumetric fog/fog for SSE
volumetric fog
This mod brings long range volumetric fog/fog effects to Skyrim Special Edition. In a nut shell, this adds mist valleys without covering the peaks or wiping the sky like standard fog. It looks a bit like LE's ENB mist, but it has a few key differences. One of them doesn't require ENB.
I call it fog instead of mist simply because the effect is subtle yet constant. The main limitation of this method is that it is not controlled by weather or time of day. That said, it looks good in many situations and adapts well. I spent a lot of time balancing it.
Effects are placed manually. This opens some doors for universal fog implementation. In fact, the harder I work, the more I believe the possibilities are truly endless and I've only scratched the surface of how to do it. I spent more time setting up the shaders correctly than I did designing the haze in the game, but the SSE engine really plays this effect like a champ, so it's possible to get more depth, detail, and localized effects. ::Problems/Limitations::
•How well this effect is integrated into the game depends on the weather module and ENB settings. Most of my balancing work was using the highly recommended Cathedral Weather and Seasons. Often, mist will lighten things up. If your ENB is turned to 11, your fog will also go out.
•Although this has the potential to replace Skyrim's standard fog, it works best keeping the combo dynamic with it.
•Sometimes hose lines may appear. This is a solvable issue, so please report any bad cases!
FPS? I'm not quoting any numbers, but on high-end systems the impact is minimal. Potatoes may be roasted. There's a lot of room for optimization, but I'm in no rush to fix it. ::Q&A::
Looking southwest, there is no mist on a mountain!
I intentionally did not cover everything about diversity. The overall purpose is to spread mist around valleys and mountains. That said, if something is really missing, please let me know.
Is ENB fog better?
I did this partly because ENB haze is said not to happen with SSE. As for better, there are pros and cons.
Strong/weak/different versions?
Possibly, but I'd like to get a baseline first if possible.
Weather updates?
I had no plan and no idea how feasible this would be. SKSE may need to modify static variables in the game.
Doesn't work, I'm weird
See next point. This is also my first released mod, so be nice!

Removing a mod couldn't be easier. There is no script. ::usage::
I can expand on this with others as long as there is credibility. But please don't post your own "little changes". Instead, please consider contacting me and integrating your changes directly (also giving credit).

Volumetric mist
This mod brings large scale distant volumetric mist/fog effects to Skyrim Special Edition. In a nut shell this adds misty valleys without obscuring peaks or wiping out the sky like standard fog does. It looks a bit like ENB mist for LE but it has several key differences. For one it does not require ENB.
I'm calling this mist rather than fog, simply because the effect is subtle and constant. The primary limitation of this method it's not controllable by weather or time of day. That said it looks good in many conditions and adapts well. I have spent a lot of time balancing it.
The effect is hand placed. This opens up some doors that a generic fog implementation does not. In fact the more I work on this the more I am convinced the possibilities are really endless and I am only scratching the surface with this implementation. I have spent more time getting the shaders right than designing the mist into the game but the SSE engine really takes this effect like a champion so there's potential for more depth and detail and localized effects.:: ISSUES / LIMITATIONS::

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
