vampire economy

Immersion/Economy/Games

Whenever you sell equipment to certain merchants, there's a chance they'll pass those items into Vokihar or Dawnguard's "Possible Items" chests. Whenever a leveled Vampire or Dawnguard loads, it has a chance to draw one or more items from the chest.

Named characters added by the Dawnguard DLC (e.g. Harkon, Isran, Ronthil, Gunmar) will not be drawn from chests; only upgraded NPCs will do so. This will preserve these characters' original outfits, or preserve the effects of any mods that change their outfits.

Additionally, Volkihar items are also available to vampires throughout Skyrim. Now, when you delve into a vampire dungeon, you may find that they are equipped with items that you have already sold to a certain blacksmith, even if you have never been to Volkihar Keep.

Likewise, Stendahl's Vigil will be drawn from the Dawnguard faction's chest.

In effect, this allows players to better equip themselves for either side (or both sides) of the Vampire War. Goods sold to one side will appear as their random equipment. You can focus on selling to one side, or arm both sides for a big harvest!

The Dawnguard prefers heavy armor and will accept and wield one-handed weapons, two-handed weapons and snipers. Volkihar prefers light armor and wields one-handed weapons and wands.

I think you'll find that this adds an interesting strategic dimension to the game.

Sell the armor to Barimund in Riften and you'll see more members of the Dawnguard fully using the item you sold. This makes for satisfying forging, as you can equip your Dawnguard with powerful weapons and armor to better fight the Volkihar clan.

It also applies to Rustleif of the Dawnstar, whose iron is mysteriously entwined in the vampire's hands. These items were most likely purchased by some mysterious middleman and smuggled to vampires throughout Skyrim. Be careful what you sell him because it might come back to bite you.

Likewise, Volkihar Keep and Fort Dawnguard both have two merchants who contribute to their faction. By selling to a faction's merchant, you can be more certain that these items will be displayed as faction gear.

Upgraded Dawnguard and Vampire NPCs will draw items from the items you sell to merchants affected by this mod. You can use this to your strategic advantage by providing your favorite faction with powerful equipment to help you advance in the Vampire questline.

You will want to consider which blacksmith to sell the item to, as some of them have a higher chance of passing the item to the vampire faction. If you find yourself in enemy faction territory, you might want to pay attention to which weapons are on sale. The ax on sale tomorrow could split you or your companions.

This mod makes the game's blacksmiths even more special by adding another dimension to them. You'll find yourself thinking about Blacksmith, Vampire, and Dawnguard quite differently.

Author's Notes

Vampire Economy is one of the series inspired by Reddit posts. This is the third model in my "economy" series. I've added Bandits, Stormcloaks and Imperials, now Volkihar and Dawnguard!

As always, please comment with your experiences and insights. I recently hit 1,000,000 downloads across all my mods, which is a huge milestone for modders in the upcoming Age of Skyrim. I invite you to check out my other mods (if you haven't already), there are links at the top of this page.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
