Brief summary:
Renewed Exterior in Markarth (REM) offers several renovations near Markarth Entrance. There is a strong emphasis on friendliness and the organic consequences of human habitation. This includes: aesthetic and functional improvements to the landscape and road infrastructure, two new sets of stairs to improve the urban appearance and facilitate more direct access to and from the site, and a brand new Salvius Farm. The model also includes turf repairs to roads and boulders in the immediate area, as well as some repairs to surrounding areas. A dozen new occlusion planes have been added to optimize performance. This mod does not modify anything within the city of Markarth, nor any of the interiors of surrounding buildings.
REM has navigated correctly in CK and has been cleaned using SSEEdit.
Several patches are provided and more will be added as needed. Almost every patch is marked as ESL, which means they will follow the load order like any other mod, but will not contribute to your 255 plugin limit.
If you want more details, keep reading. If this surprises you, jump over to Compatibility and Load Order for important information, and be sure to check out my Mod Recommendations as well.
While I've created dozens of mods for my own personal use, this is the first one I've shared here. Please tell me what you think of Markarth Renewed Exterior, if you like it, be sure to approve it!
Before indifference:
In Vanilla Skyrim, when crossing the Markarth Pass, you encounter a less picturesque cityscape. Roads are dilapidated or missing, and major intersections behind bridges are covered with clumsy foliage, impeding natural flow of movement and
In the real world, carriages are quickly cut off. What follows is a very steep and bumpy urban slope, a weedy wheat farm that doesn't actually grow wheat, and whose incompetent occupants are likely to be evicted by an angry Jarl and a hungry city. - Then, when one finally winds their way and reaches the entrance, they encounter cluttered stables unfit for pigs and narrow rickety steps separated by a dead lone bush. Does this seem real to you?
Needs to be updated:
Landscaping:
The first change I made was to widen the opening between the two mountains to provide a more impressive sightline from Markarth Pass to the city. The entire landscape architecture was overhauled. The slopes are more graceful, the river is widened where it was previously very narrow, boulders were moved, endemic Reach plants were added, and many grass changes were made to prevent items from being placed in my mod. This includes Markarth Pass, the road from Salvius Farm to Kolskeggr Mine, and the road from Kolskeggr Mine back to Markarth Pass. No other roads were changed in The Reach, as that would probably be a huge overreach for the intended purpose of my mod, but I also think Jarl would care less about maintaining areas away from the city.
Infrastructure:
Related roads nearby were moved and shaped to accommodate the natural flow of traffic. Potholes are filled in and large gaps in paving stones and sections of road are interconnected. This maintenance naturally moves away from the city to accommodate the incongruity of the previous vanilla roads. The path has also been simplified by aligning the small bridge at the new farm entrance with the left-hand mine shaft. Pedestrians traveling to or from the city can now bypass the curving path used by the carriages via a new set of Dwemer stairs in the middle of the central platform. This created a straight path to the entrance, with another matching set of stairs that I carefully affixed to the old ugly steps that were not removable. This creates a focused, more …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
