About this mod Machine translation

Undiscovered map markers (excluding city markers) are obscured or invisible.

Ever wonder how your character knows that some undiscovered place ahead - still unseen - is a cave, a shack or a shipwreck? Knowing the general locations of major cities makes sense, but for other places, it seems dragon-born people have a strange prophet. The purpose of this mod is to solve this problem.

All undiscovered location map markers (excluding cities) are replaced with obscured symbols (select one of two options) or made invisible. As an additional option, I used the same method (making the map markers transparent) to remove the enemy icons and player position markers from the compass and map. Finally, I have built-in compatibility with several popular UI mods.

compatibility

Since hudmenu.gfx and map.swf were edited, it will not be compatible with other modified Mods. These files contain the HUD, compass, and icons used by the map, but not the map itself or map marker locations.

I've included in the fomod compatibility files mods for several mods that add color to map markers: Color Quest and Capital Map Markers, Color Map Markers and Pastel Map Markers, and - from Skyrim LE - Limo's Map Markers and Not Another Color Map Icon Mod [NACMIM]. For the pastel map markers, to keep with the theme I created two blurry pastel versions of the undiscovered map marker options.

I've also included compatibility files for SkyUI and SkyHUD (same applies to vanilla and all four color options listed above). There is an optional file for LIHUD2, but only in vanilla color.

version number

The major version is for SSE v1.5.3+, but I kept the latest working version of SSE v1.4.2 as an optional file. There are currently only three differences between them: the older version still supports Minimalistic HUD and does not support SkyUI SSE, while the newer version does the opposite. Both versions support SkyHUD and the following map marker shading modules: Color Map Markers, Limo Map Markers, NACMIM and Soft Map Markers, but the newer version also supports Color Quest and Capital Map markers.

Recommendations/Credit

I encourage the use of SkyUI and SkyHUD along with colored map marker mods such as Color Quest and Capital Map Markers, Color Map Markers, Pastel Map Markers or Simple Color Map Markers as I patched the files from their mod to make the version of this mod compatible with their mod. Minimalist HUDs can be fun sometimes. Unfortunately, neither Limo's Map Markers nor NACMIM have been ported to SSE, but I also owe credit to its creators, Limosk and SHiva64 - for their pioneering work colorizing the icons used in maps and compasses. Pastel map markers and EzEs map markers are both based on their work.

Ultimately, although not available in Skyrim SE, I was initially inspired by the mod Immersive Undiscovered Locations, although I expanded on the non-prediscovered content (no longer including Jarl's House, Academy of Winterhold, etc.), created my own variant of the obscured map marker icon, and included options for invisible undiscovered map markers and invisible enemy markers.

Ever wondered how your character knows that the undiscovered place somewhere ahead - still unseen - is a cave, a shack, or a shipwreck? While knowing the rough location of the major cities makes some sense, for other places it seems the dragonborn has a strange prescience. This mod aims to solve this issue.

All undiscovered location map markers - excluding the cities - are either replaced with an indistinct symbol (choose one of two options) or are rendered invisible. As additional options, I use the same method (making the map marker transparent) to remove enemy icons from the compass and the player location marker from the map. Finally, I have built-in compatibility with several popular UI mods.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
