After a frustrating time uploading a mod via Creation Kit (and hoping to port it to Xbox One), I decided to make a quickstart tutorial on how to upload a simple texture replacement mod for Skyrim SE from start to finish using Creation Kit 2.0. .

Hi guys, I recently made my first (and probably only) Skyrim SE mod, no more blurry constellation stars, and uploaded it to . A simple and rewarding process!

Someone liked my mod and asked me if I could port it to XboxOne. I decided to give it a try. Is it just a simple texture replacement? How hard can it be?

What followed was a three-day effort to figure out how to use the Creation Kit and upload mods to Bethesda.net, while also figuring out why there were some Creation Kit freezing, crashing, and dysfunctional mods. I didn't expect to have such difficulty, but it soon became clear that CK had been playing around and/or clumsy from the start and never did much.

I finally got my mod working on PC and (I think) XboxOne and thought I'd create a quick start tutorial on how to upload a simple texture replacement mod from start to finish for Skyrim SE using Creation Kit 2.0. This isn't usually necessary for those using it, but learning how to do it is the only way to have a chance of porting any mod to Xbox One.

Much of this will be obvious to those who have gone through this process, but it may be helpful to a few. For more complex mods, this is still relevant as it's the basic foundation of how to upload a mod without freezing/crashing, which seems to be everywhere in Creation Kit.

Install Skyrim SE via Steam (this is necessary - your Bethesda.net account must be linked to your Steam account as shown below, otherwise the Creation Kit will not allow you to upload anything).

Create a Bethesda.net account, then download and install the Bethesda launcher. Once the installation is complete, open the Bethesda launcher and locate the Creation Kit application and install it in the Skyrim SE folder (this should be the default path, but this is not always the case. Check to be sure).

Open your Steam version of Skyrim SE and go to the Mods menu. Log in to your newly created Bethesda.net account - this will link it to your Steam account. Then exit Skyrim to start working on your mod.

Place the loose contents of your mod into your Skyrim Data folder as it would be in Skyrim's main .bsa file, e.g., "Textures\Sky\skyrimgalaxy.dds".

Go to your Skyrim SE game folder and open "CreationKit.ini". Then add the following lines under [General]:

bAllowMultipleMasterFiles = 1

bAllowMultipleMasterLoads = 1

Scroll down to [Archive] and change

bUseArchives = 0

to

bUseArchives = 1

Also in [Archive], on the line that starts "SResourceArchiveList2", add the DLC.bsa file to the end of the list, so it says:

SResourceArchiveList2 = Skyrim  -  Voices_en0.bsa,Skyrim  -  Textures0.bsa,Skyrim  -  Textures1.bsa,Skyrim  -  Textures2.bsa,Skyrim  -  Textures3.bsa,Skyrim  -  Textures4.bsa,Skyrim  -  Textures5.bsa,Skyrim  -  Textures6.bsa, Skyrim  -  Textures7.bsa,Skyrim  -  Textures8.bsa,Skyrim  -  Patch.bsa,DawnGuard.bsa,HearthFires.bsa,Dragonborn.bsa

Save changes to .ini.

Open the Creation Kit via the Bethesda Launcher, or directly via the .exe in the Skyrim SE folder. Creation Kit may ask you if you want to unzip the 'scripts.zip' archive - say yes, and wait for completion.

Once the creation kit is open and ready, click "File > Data..." and double-click all the major .esm files at the top of the list: Skyrim.esm, Update.esm, Dawnguard.esm, HearthFires.esm, and Dragonborn.esm. After checking all these options, click OK. Several error messages will appear while those are loading - click "Yes to All" until it finishes loading the .esm file.

Once it's done, it will give you a list of about 150 warnings - you can close it and click "File > Save" to create an empty .esp. Name the .esp something simple, for example for me it was "No Constellations" and click "Save".

Click File > Login to Bethesda.net... and log in.

Click 'File > …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
