Fast and versatile embedded depth of field shader with tons of features

Overview

Need some slight depth of field for gaming, or are you torturing your video card with 4K, 5K resolutions and need some nice bokeh shapes to accentuate that screensaver of that perfect shot you've been setting up for half an hour? Stop talking! This depth of field shader can do all of this.

While the size and feature set may be a little intimidating at first, you'll find that it's actually easy to get used to, and even if you just want a bit of blur in your scenes, you can use conservative settings and get what you want without sacrificing a lot of FPS.

This is the DX11 version of my DoF shader for SSE/FO4. For DX9 versions of Skyrim LE or other DX9 games, please visit the mod page on Skyrim LE.

feature

Sophisticated autofocus ensures that important parts of the image are always in focus on Person 1 and Person 3

Color difference adopts new innovative algorithm, cost-effective

Multiple shape controls to easily recreate any bokeh shape in your photos

Smoothing of bokeh shapes, improving regular Gaussian blur

On-the-fly option to render at lower resolutions (like ENB "size scale") for easy wide and high quality blurs on hardware and frame rates

Blur width scaled by screen percentage rather than pixel radius, resulting in consistent perceived blur radius relative to the screen across all resolutions/DSR

Highly optimized algorithms for best performance

Advanced color leak repair that completely removes halos from images around focused objects

Bokeh emphasis complements Skyrim’s low color range

Workaround for buggy procedural color correction code in forbeffect (fixed by Boris a while ago but present in almost every custom enbeffect) that made the alpha channel of the DoF output affect CC, making the focus area look different

Installation and compatibility

Compatible with almost any ENB preset, it requires texOriginal (which calculates DoF blur at a lower resolution and has a "backup" full-resolution image to blend with), which is in addition to the DoF file format present in ENBSeries version 0.264+. Depending on your usage or preset you can call the file enbdepthoffield.fx (new separate file controlled by EnableDepthOfField in enbseries.ini in current ENB version) or enbeffectprepass.fx (old DoF shader name controlled by EnableDepthOfField in enbseries.ini in old ENB version, but still up to date and now used for other filters). ENBSeries reads files in the Skyrim\ and Skyrim\enbseries\ folders, one of which has higher priority depending on where your preset's other fx files (enbbloom.fx, enbeffect.fx...) are located. Put it there, after game restart or alt+tab, The new shader should be loaded (the controls in the enbdepthoffield section should have changed); if not, click Apply Changes. Then configure it as needed.

Enable autofocus If enabled, the DoF will automatically focus on the autofocus sample center and -radius. If disabled, DoF will use artificial focus depth.

Autofocus sample center DoF focuses on the X and Y position on the screen. 0.5 represents the center of the screen. Note that the Y-axis starts at the top of the screen (DirectX convention).

Autofocus Sample Radius DoF takes several samples around the center of the autofocus sample to find out what the focus is, as a single sample is very inaccurate. This setting adjusts the size of the sample pattern. Larger values tend to result in a calmer blur when the scene changes significantly, and smaller values react to small changes around the center of the sample.

Artificial focus depth The focus depth used when autofocus is disabled, smaller values are closer, larger values are further away.

The near blur curve DoF causes blur behind and in front of the focal plane; the further away the focal plane, the less. This parameter controls the enhancement of blur in front of the focus plane. Higher values result in less blur due to a greater depth difference between focus depth and …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
