About this mod Machine translation

Applies a (user configurable via console) hard hat on all slow effects (with a way to increase/scale the amplitude). Primarilly was motivated by a desire to avoid the impact of scaling. SKSE is required.

LE version is here

What it can do:

Implement a hard limit on the power of slow effects. By default, the cap is set to 80 to match my personal preference, but this can be adjusted using the console. Just open the console and type "set SCS_MagnitudeCap to x", where x is the maximum slowness you want to allow. This cap serves both as a balance adjustment to avoid the ridiculously slow effect of getting characters into position, and as a way to fix a bug where the effect stopped working when it reached level 100.

This mod also applies a common fix to make slow effects start and stop at the appropriate time to hit the effect.

Effects currently handled by this mod:

All Vanilla Cream Slow Acting variants. This is the main focus as it is by far the most likely slow effect to exhibit runaway scaling/amplitude issues.

Slow poison alchemy effect. This is included because despite the intent not to scale in size, the Poison Weakness effect will still increase its magnitude.

All plugins are esl-flagged/espfe to avoid counting against the 255 plugin limit.

SKSE

compatibility:

In general, this approach should be highly compatible with anything that isn't already trying to manipulate slow effects. Please note that any other mod that edits vanilla slow effects will require a patch or loading before this mod. Additionally, any mod that adds its own new slowness effects will require a patch for the limitations introduced here to handle these new effects.

For details on specific mods with known compatibility, please see the compatibility notes article.

Questions and Answers:

Q: Has this issue been fixed before?

Answer: Yes and no. The stop/start timing issue has been fixed perfectly before as part of other mods, so this is nothing new. Although the main bug driving this mod is not easy to fix. There are other mods that solve it in different ways, but all the ones I know of have some quirks and/or serious error conditions. I present this as a simple yet important solution without involving any other potentially unwanted gameplay effects.

Q: Have you asked Frost Slow Tweaks to fix this issue?

A: Yes, I did. See above. Frost Slow Tweaks still falls into the gimmicky/weird category, as it either forces a fixed magnitude of slowness without any scale, or it causes the effect to be amplified and the target missing stamina. None of these impacts are solely the focus of solving practical problems. This implementation would also lead to very strange compatibility situations with any mod that wanted to apply vanilla spells in a slightly different way, such as a spell pack that wanted to use vanilla frost to slowly apply a weaker but more persistent movement debuff. This prompted me to rethink the solution, but the only better way I could find was SKSE. Therefore, I'm releasing this as a separate mod rather than an update/option for Frost Slow Tweaks.

What it Does:

Implement a hard cap on how powerful slow effects can be. By default, the cap is set to 80 to match my personal preferences, but it can be adjusted using the console. Simply open the console and type "set SCS_MagnitudeCap to x" with x being the maximum amount of slow you want to allow. This cap both acts as a balance tweak to avoid ridiculous levels of slow effect holding characters in place, and a means of fixing the bug where the effect simply ceases functioning when it reaches a magnitude of 100.

This mod also applies a common fix to make slow effects start and stop at the proper times for the effects it touches.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
