Fast travel is no longer free! Along the way you'll use gold, food, drink, and potions - which increase as the travel time increases - and you may run into trouble, raising your needs even more. This mod is intended for players who like to avoid fast travel, but will use it often when annoying quests take you to the other side of a continent.

Require

SkyUI - used to configure this mod via MCM

SKSE - for scripting functions

Optional

iNeed - Allows this mod to use iNeed waterkins and diseases. Additionally, when food/drinks are consumed during travel, they satisfy iNeed hunger/thirst levels.

inspired by (alternative)

Fast travel cost - the main inspiration for this mod, but I want more!

Quick travel ambush and aftermath - I like the idea, but I'd like a little less!

free mods

Transport and Fast Travel Overhaul (CFTO) - Provides a very user-friendly and immersive alternative to long-range map-based fast travel.

You're hungry - making food and drink harder to come by and therefore more valuable.

how does this work

When you fast travel, the distance traveled is calculated, and upon reaching your destination, food, drink, health potions, and gold may be consumed/cleared from your inventory. The number of items required depends on the distance traveled, so a short jump might only require a sip of water, while a long voyage will require several drinks, food, health potions, and a pile of gold.

If you start the journey on horseback, the duration/effect will be significantly shortened, so be sure to ride rather than walk!

If you don't have the necessary items on hand, you'll need to pay gold to buy them at simulated stops at taverns along the way. Example: If you owe three items of food after a long trip, but only have one item of food when you start, you will consume that food and also buy and consume two items of food.

There is no debt system in this mode, so even if you are broke you can still travel - it won't take away your (non-existent) gold.

You are also likely to encounter three types of trouble during your voyage: One, you encounter bad weather and need more food and drink because you need shelter to wait out the storm. Two, you enter a battle and need extra health potions to heal your wounds. Three, you encounter a festering beast in the wilderness, and its bite will bring a disease that will require treatment once you reach your destination.

configuration

This mode is fully configurable via the MCM under the "RAB Travel Costs" heading. Typically, quantity is increased to increase cost/roughness. Set them to 0 to remove the feature. If you want to learn more about what they are and how they work, read below.

Multiplier calculation

The distance traveled is an arbitrary number, but I used the distance from Riverwood to Whiterun as a base. With that in mind, here are some example trip distances:

1.0 = Riverwood to Whiterun (short trip)

2.3 = Whiterun to Morthal (medium distance)

7.8 = Living in solitude (very long distance travel)

These distances are multiplied by gold, food, drink, potions, and chance multipliers to determine how much you owe. For example, the default drink multiplier is min = 0.4 max = 1.8. A trip from Whiterun to Morthal will require between 1 (0.4x2.3) and 4 (1.8x2.3) drinks. A trip from Riften to Solitude (a longer trip) takes between 3 (0.4x7.8) and 14 (1.8x7.8) drinks.

The same goes for casual encounters (weather, combat, and disease). For example, by default, the disease chance is set to 10, so there is a 10% chance of getting sick when traveling from Riverwood to Whiterun, but if you travel from Riften to Solitude, there is a 78% chance.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
