Thank you very much! I thought I'd never make it... ;_;
premise
Is it annoying when an NPC dies due to a nasty dragon/vampire attack? Using OBIS, wouldn't it be possible to stop powerful bandits from murdering everyone in that unwalled town? Well boys, I got a mod for you. This mod saves your friendly neighbors from premature death. Technically, it marks certain NPCs as protected. But wait! Aren't there already mods that do this? Yes, but I don't like the way they implement the Protected flag, so I'll try to explain it as best I can.
What's the difference?
Past NPC protection modules have done their job. They work as expected. NPCs do not die easily because they are marked as protected, meaning they can only die from player hits. So what's the big deal? Past mods have protected NPCs by editing their Actor records and checking their protected flag. Absolutely, but what happens when you install another mod that edits the Actor records of the same NPC? Their protected flag will be overwritten because the new mod you installed does not have the protected flag enabled for them. But isn't it just a matter of using SSEEdit and forwarding the Protected flag to it? Yes, this problem is easily solved, but what about NPCs that become non-essential after certain missions? Check its protected logo? This won't happen if they already have Essential set in their Actor record in the first place.
{Throughout this description, I use the term "actor record" to refer to the "NPC_" table type used in the creation suite for specifying NPC and creature object records. They are called Actor records because NPCs and creatures are collectively referred to as Actors in the CK Wiki. Sorry if anyone is confused by this naming scheme. }

Spoiler: ShowHere is my mod's way of doing things.
This isn't a new discovery that people never knew about, but I don't understand why no one is taking advantage of it. I mean right there (in CK). What I'm talking about is the reference alias. What about reference aliases? They have a protected flag that can be checked. What? !
I find this method of protecting NPCs via quest aliases more efficient than editing the full Actor record (which is more easily overwritten by other mods). The time it takes to have to resolve all the conflicts in a patch is really annoying, so I've saved you the time of protecting NPCs by having them protected by quests that can't be overridden by anything. This will make your life easier as you won't have to worry about civilian NPCs dying because you didn't know you installed a mod that edited the protected flag for Actor records. I know, for sure, a lot of people use the NPC appearance overhaul mod because they think Skyrim NPCs look ugly, but, guess what? Loading this module after an NPC protection module will make those NPCs unprotected again. Of course you can fix this by making a patch, but you can save time by using this mod and making sure your NPCs never get killed since my protected flag won't be overwritten!

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
