Rebuilding the pressure system from Darkest Dungeon to Skyrim.
GPortner has produced a more refined and in-depth version, which I encourage everyone to check out; consider it unofficial
Update to this mod
That said I probably won't look into this pattern any further as I think the concept is much better now. Thank you all for taking the time to try it out!
Hungry mods, thirsty mods, sleep mods... now there's a stress mod!
Introduction
One of the most fascinating features in the indie game Darkest Dungeon is the pressure gauge. The idea that a hero not only has physical needs, but also psychological needs. I thought this was a very creative and well-thought-out system, so I started thinking about whether a feature like this could be replicated in Skyrim.
Overview
This mod adds a basic pressure system to Skyrim. Entering combat, sneaking aronud, getting seriously injured, traveling outdoors at night, and exploring hostile territory; all of these actions will slowly increase your stress. Spending time in a house, temple or hotel that you own can lead to a gradual decline in stress. Sleeping in one of these locations or simply using the waiting function will also reduce your stress levels proportionally. As your characters level up, they become more resistant to stress and can go longer without returning to safety.
solve
Once your pressure reaches 100 (maximum 200), your character's resolve will be tested. Most of the time, this will result in your character receiving a severe pain, but the likelihood of gaining a virtue is also slim. What this requires is outlined below.
suffering
If your character is afflicted, they will randomly receive one of five debuffs: Despair, Masochism, Paranoia, Lethargy, or Irrational. These debuffs are permanent until you reduce your character's stress to 60 or lower. When you're tortured, you'll also slowly bleed until you get treatment.
despair
Becoming Hopeless will reduce your damage and spell duration by 80%
self-abuse
Becoming a masochist increases the damage you take and spell costs by 4x
Paranoid
Paranoia reduces your resistance to stress, quickly increasing the rate at which it accumulates.
Lethargic
While you're in combat, becoming drowsy sets your carry weight to 0, forcing you to fight at a snail's pace.
unreasonable
Becoming Irrational randomly disables an aspect of gameplay every five seconds of combat. This can be your ability to attack, your ability to sneak, your ability to activate objects, or even your ability to move at all.
virtue
During a Resolve check, you have a rare chance of gaining Virtue instead of Affliction. Virtue provides a temporary (5 minute) buff to your character, reducing your stress to 50 and preventing it from exceeding 100 for the duration of the effect, and also saves you from further resolution for half an hour of truth check time. This mod adds 3 advantages.
vigorous
Gain 100 points of health and your health regeneration is increased by 200%
powerful
Doubles your attack damage and spell power
focus
Gain 100 points of stamina and mana, and increase regeneration of both by 200%
Don't rush!
If your stress goes unchecked for too long and you manage to reach 200 points, your character will suffer a heart attack and die on the spot.
Finally, for TORCHES!
Equipping a torch reduces the passive pressure behind enemies and/or increases night travel by 75%. Vampires are completely unaffected by passive night pressure, although they still gain pressure in hostile areas. Casting the Candlelight spell also creates a small resistance to passive pressure.
Reflection
When you first load the mod, you will get a smaller power called "Introspect". This spell allows you to check your current stress level; it will be printed in the spell's description, or you can cast a spell to have a message pop up in the corner of the screen.
Require
Just Skyrim, no DLC required.
BUGS
The Introspection spell has a delay of a few seconds before updating the displayed value to the act …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
