General instructions

Does it bother you that so many modded locations have visible map markers from the start? For some, you can even fast travel instantly. This can be useful if you want to roleplay a character that starts with a certain player house or in some other special situation. But in all other cases, it looks like immersion to my eyes.

I understand the mod author wants people to be able to get to their location from the start. However, if you're like me and end up with a very large mod that generates a completely messed up map at the beginning of the game, that's going to be annoying. Why have I marked two random locations on a map before and never heard of them?

How it works and you can do it yourself

The process of creating your own Hidden Map Marker patch is very simple. I only make these suggestions because in my experience most people haven't even touched xEdit other than cleaning stuff according to the guide.

Map markers are nothing more than objects placed on the map, like barrels or trees. What I did was find the corresponding "Place Object" record, which was easy because the "name" in xEdit was the same as the name of the location on the map. The entry for this record is "Map Markers" and under that "FNAM - Map Markers" you can set certain markers.

Visible = Map markers are visible from the start of the game

Can travel to = enable fasttravel from game start

Hidden "show all" = don't dare ask me what the hell this does, we won't need it

None = map markers not visible

So what I'm going to do is remove the "visible" and "if can go" flags if they exist, literally. Now you have a nice, immersive, vanilla flavored map marker.

Come on, I still don't understand, how does it work step by step?

Well, remember that group of people who didn’t know anything except the basics of xEdit above? You can do this step by step:

  • Launch xEdit via your module manager (hopefully MO2 or Vortex) (x is a placeholder btw, in this case I'm referring to SSEdit)
  • When asked which modules you should load, loading the mod you want to patch is enough

</ s> </ s> </ s>

  • Once loading is complete (the last message in the log on the right should be "Backgroundloader complete"), double-click to expand the mod you want to patch, then look for "Worldspace" at the bottom, which is where all the objects were added to the world

</ s> </ s> </ s>

  • Now expand "Worldspace" by double clicking while holding down the left Alt key, this way, everything in "Worldspace" will be expanded, not just the top level entry like before
  • Browse through the names until you find one that is the same as how the location appears on the map, in our case Blackthorn. If you're not sure, note that the name of the map marker record is only "Name" in the left-hand list, with all other entries having the ID immediately following it, such as [STAT:0000003B] in this example. Once you think you have found the right button and click on the right side of the xEdit it should say "NAME-Base MapMarker".
  • When you scroll down on the right side you can already see the "FNAM - Map Flag" entry, you need to edit it so that the map flag is not visible. However, instead of editing the original plugin, you want to create your own patch. Why? Every update of the mod will break the changes made and after a few edits you will just forget what has been changed in the plugin and it will be more convenient to use a patcher. So, right-click on the map marker record we just found in the list on the left and select "Copy as replacement..."
  • In the next window you can choose where to copy this record to. There's no point in copying this into an existing plugin (in case anyone else comes along), y …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
