About this mod Machine translation

This mod changes high fantasy race names to Tamrielic versions of inventory items and actors. The tutorial also shows how quick and easy it is to make such a change after using the newly released "Bethesda Kit" esp to xml converter, find and replace tool, and generating a delta patch in xEdit.

When the Bethesda Toolkit was released, I also thought a lot of people who discovered it had thought of it; this would make it very easy to find and replace in plugins. I started testing and here it is. But I don't want to just offer the edits I made - I want to show everyone how easy and quick it is to do so BethKit gets more attention and I can get more mods made by other people!

This is the plugin in the download section. It collects records from Skyrim, DLC, and USSEP, and renames inventory items and mobs from Dwarves to Dwemer, Elves to Altmeri, Dark Elf to Dunmer, Wood Elf to Bosmer, and Orcish to Orsimer. It's not a complete renaming of these things, nor are all changes entirely justified (for example, Orcs identify themselves as Orcs, so renaming Orcish things to Orismers might be overkill) - it's more of a proof of concept.

Installation is simple - it's just an ESP-FE plug-in.

Load immediately after USSEP. It will conflict with many other mods.

Keep in mind that these changes are done via Find and Replace, so not all changes will 100% make sense.

Also keep in mind that I'm doing this on a limited selection of records, so there will be gaps on the renamed records.

Now, onto the main event, your own guide to doing this kind of thing:

This guide assumes that you are already basicly familiar with the operation of xEdit/SSEEdit, but you may have never used a command prompt before.

Renaming all cases of Dwarven to Dwemer for Skyrim/Update/DLC/USSEP is all well and good, but what about the mod that edits all those records? I'll be guiding us through the big "renamed" version; weapon armor clothing and sundry fixes. I'm just using it as an example because it's well documented. You can use this guide with any plugin you want.

First, open WACCF in xEdit.

We'll only focus on records that have player-facing text, which in most cases is the name of the thing you see on the UI. I'm choosing a WACCF-specific record type, but really, depending on the mod you're editing, you might want to do this for non-player characters or spells or whatever you want. With them selected, right-click on them and copy Deep Deep into the new plugin.

Make sure the new plug-in name is easy to use; you'll want to enter it a few more times.

Download the Bethesda Toolkit and place BethKit.exe in a folder within easy reach; you'll need to navigate to its location by entering the full path. I put mine in E:\Skyrim Apps\Bethkit

Copy, yes COPY, don't move (this is important), put the new plugin you just made in the same folder as BethKit.exe

Now it's time to open the command prompt. Execute the WindowsKey-R shortcut and enter "cmd".

</ s> </ s> </ s>

Now you have to navigate to the location where BethKit and the new plugin are placed. Since I have my folder in E:\Skyrim Apps\Bethkit, first I will enter "E:" (without quotes) to change to the E: drive. Then type "cd Skyrim Apps" and finally "cd BethKit".

</ s> </ s> </ s>

Now, just type "BethKit convert YourPluginName.esp YourPluginName.esx" and let the magic happen. It should create a new file with an .esx extension. Don't close the command window! We're not done yet.

Open it in a text editor. I recommend using Notepad++, but any tool with good "find and replace" functionality will work.

It is very important to add a space at the end of the string (series of letters/numbers) you want to find and replace. Without this, you could also replace the string in file names and folder names, which you don't want to do. Since we work in English, adjectives come before their descriptions, so spaces are always at the end. Don't forget to add spaces to the "repla …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
