About this mod Machine translation
A simple mod that adds portable lanterns to guards, vigilantes, watchmen, and all NPCs who normally carry torches. Basically it's a torch replacement, but without removing the torches from the world* (Standard Edition only)
Lantern for guard, vigilance, soldier, watchman, etc.
Guards, vigilantes, watchmen, and basically every NPC that normally carries a torch will be equipped with portable lanterns.
Torches still exist in the world and can be found in the usual places, such as in dungeons and the like, as well as in scattered locations around the world. Forelhost on the shelf or lying on the ground in Irkngthand*
But NPCs generally don't use them (there are a few exceptions where it makes more sense to carry them, i.e. Stroke the Flame (light up the portrait) Glory of the Dead (light the torch) and enter the Skyhaven Temple (light the sconce on fire)*
If you don't like the script or the dlc, you can completely replace all cables with portable lanterns (excluding electrostatic torches) with alternative versions. This is just a simple 1:1 mesh replacer with no scripts or modified packages, so may be more compatible for those with conflicting mods. You can also mark it as ESL if you prefer.
Available in two flavors: regular lantern model and MM lantern model (1k diffuse 512k normals)**
NOTE: Portable lanterns will still act like torches to detonate gas traps etc.
*Excludes alternative versions.
**If you prefer, you can use the 4k or 2k texture replacements on the MM Lanterns page
Ok these are the warnings:
All torches you are currently carrying will instantly become lanterns. This includes all torches, containers, and anything your followers are carrying in your inventory.
Portable lanterns will not expire after waiting for a certain amount of time with torches. The torch still exists in the world as it always has.
There are several modified scripts and a modified AI package (forwarding USLEEP/USSEP changes) with the standard version (Guard Torches)
Alternative version (Lantern Torches) is a free script and package but removes all non-static torches from the world (replaces them with lanterns)
You cannot compress/tag the standard version (Guard Lanterns) to ESL as it will break scripts (and mods). The alternative version (Lantern Torches) is no problem.
So why should you succeed?
Torches are fine for dungeons, caves and ruins, but in towns and settlements? Where can I buy lanterns?
Lanterns can be hung or left around etc so why doesn't anyone carry them? They are safer than swinging a flaming stick.
Wearable lanterns are great, but it's entirely up to the player. I'd like to see more general usage among citizens.
I think to be honest though I just got tired of everyone just carrying torches and decided I wanted more variety.
FAQ
Q: What’s the point? Chesko's wearable lantern is already a thing.
A: This is great for players and followers, but for regular/other NPCs it's a shame.
Q: Is this mod compatible with wearable lanterns?
Answer: Yes.
Q: Does it require a wearable lantern?
Answer: No.
Q: So it uses his lantern model?
A: Not really, I recreated them using the original vanilla models. But I certainly take inspiration from WL.
Q: Can you wear them from the hip? Like WL?
This is beyond the scope of this mod, as they are a type of armor and things get very complicated adding them to their level list and inventory. This is a simple torch replacer, I just didn't want to invest so much time and effort into doing such a small effect.
Q: So what's the difference between this and WL?
A: WL focuses on players and fans, this focuses more on being a no-frills add-on for regular NPCs.
Q: So...can players use these lanterns?
Answer: Yes. But the mod doesn't really want to be player-centered. If you're looking for bells and whistles, use WL instead.
Q: Can a patch be released for wearable lanterns to use these lanterns instead of the MM version? !
A: Permissions are not currently turned on on WL and Chesko cannot currently d …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
