GG Smith

(Since I need to choose a nice mod name, let's use GG for GestaltGaul?)

The premise behind this mod is to lighten my load order on PS4. If it makes anyone on this site happy to incorporate into their load order or motivate them, that's all I can ask for.

First, what this mod does:

Changing how the original perk tree is split into meaningless paths as well as adjusting the front-end loading of bonuses will prevent people from investing in perk trees until they have enough perkpoints to jump to the materials they want. Vanilla perks have been merged/expanded, and new support perks introduced to fill the gaps left. Perktree shapes have also been moved to better fit the constellations.

This has been done script free, nothing has been removed, the vanilla perks have been modified, and new weapon/armor recipes have been deliberately not added as this should be compatible with the unofficial patch fix regarding weapon/armor/tempered recipes. If you install it on vanilla without the Unofficial patch, the tempering changes will be correctly applied to items that have tempering recipes but are missing the keyword to benefit from the x2 perk that was available in the past. This won't do anything for items that lack a tempering recipe.

None of these new effects are set to show up in Active Effects because I don't want to clutter the list. Most of this is straightforward, direct skill boosts will appear in green (depending on your mod), just like most buffs in vanilla. These points do not count toward skill requirements. Just deduct the exact value your allowance tells you.

standard smith main road

Apprentice Smith: Lets you craft everything the Iron Smith once let you do, with the tempering bonus reduced from x2 to x1.20, but applies to all material types.

Journeyman Smithing: Lets you craft Elven/Dwarven and everything Orcish Smithing once let you do, with an overall grinding bonus x1.50 unlocked.

Expert Smith: Lets you craft all advanced armor so you can do everything, with an overall grinding bonus of x1.70 to unlock.

Master Smithing: Lets you craft everything Glass and Ebony Smithing ever let you do, with an overall grind bonus x2.00 to unlock. At a depth of 70 and 4 in the training skill, the blacksmith now reaches vanilla's grinding bonus again. Stahlrim still retains quest prerequisites.

Standard Smith's Side Path

Armor Specialist and Weapon Specialist are for those who want to nerf their blacksmithing skills and avoid alchemy/enchantment, as well as those who aren't looking for armor/weapons beyond a certain level or want to kick out their existing gear (think the difference between elves/dwarves and orcs). I set it to x0.40 bonus, if you stop at Journeyman Smithing, it's actually worth picking up Expert Smithing. People who choose to stick with Smithing now get a nice bonus as they can increase their tempering bonus to x2.40 vanilla value, canceled by Alchemy/Enchanting.

magic road

Arcane Blacksmith: Now requires a deeper understanding of the blacksmith trade and as a branch to keep Daedric Smithing away from non-magical paths. The forging method of Daedric equipment has always held a deeper magic. Note that Daedric equipment now retains the same perkpoint investment as vanilla, but you get more (Elven Smithing and Advanced Armors) in return. You gain Fortify which increases magic resistance by +5. This is the same as enchantments.

Draconic Secrets: To make this perk even more valuable, you now get a +10 resistance buff to damage from fire and ice magic. This can unleash magic, or just help hunt down more dragons. This is......

New support allowance

Metallurgist: As a Smith you may want to mine your own materials or get the most coins. Due to the use of hazardous …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
