Step by step "how to guide" with pictures
Here is a step-by-step guide that anyone can use to convert modes in the load order that simply have the ESL flag set.
Thanks to BigandFlabby, ElminsterAU and the xEdit team, it's a very simple, safe and easy way to convert many of your patterns into ESL tagged files which will then no longer use any of the 254 available plugin slots.

FAQ
We hope you find our guide user-friendly. BigandFlabby takes great care when revising the guide to ensure that the information provided is easy to understand and accurate.
(FYI: bigandfaby alias JOstrus is a well-respected participant in projects such as NifScope, NexusModManager, and xEdit).
We also understand that you may still have questions, and we believe we can answer your most common and important questions:
Q: Is this safe? Will it ruin my mod?
A: If the formid in the file is not valid for an ESL-tagged file, xEdit will refuse to save the file after trying to set the tag. If you can set it up and save it, you can be sure it will work as expected when converted.
If xEdit specifies that it can be converted to ESL using the parameter -PseudoESL, it is generally safe to do so. ElminsterAU and its band made great efforts to properly review and validate the standards before announcing this possibility.
Q: Will this affect my saved games?
A: No. You can switch your mode at any time.
Q: Will this change my loading order?
A: No. Converting ESP-marked.ESP to ESL-marked.ESP just means the file no longer counts on the 254 plugin border. It does not change the file's position in the load order, nor does it affect the ability to sort the load order.
Q: xEdit only flags some of my patterns, what's the problem?
A: No. Some modes cannot be converted to ESL due to data limitations, others have additional requirements for advanced modes or only for mod authors.
Q: (Insert Mod Name) Using .Ba2 files and/or loose files, can I convert this type of mod?
A: Yes. Converting ESP to ESL has no effect on schema's .Ba2 or loose files.
Q: Can I convert ESL tagged .esp to an .ESL file?
A: Yes. Change the extension of .esp to .esl, or you can change the extension of .esl to .esp.
Note: Files with .esp extension can be sorted according to loading order, files with .esl extension cannot be sorted.
Q: Will this improve my gaming performance?
A: No. Converting ESP to ESL has no performance impact.
Q: Will this affect my ability to edit schemas to resolve conflicts or adjust them after conversion?
A: No. You will be able to continue editing the file.
Q: xEdit has not marked (insert mode name) as ESL compatible, can I still convert it?
A: Not recommended. Do so at your own risk.

Important sub-clauses:
If the formid in the file is not valid for an ESL-tagged file, xEdit will refuse to save the file after trying to set the tag. If you can set it up and save it, you can be sure it will work as expected when converted.
Generally speaking, xEdit is safe when it is called with parameter pseudo ESL. ElminsterAU and its band made great efforts to properly review and validate the standards before announcing this possibility.
Big and flabby.
I would only agree if the original mod author compressed the formid. In this case, only before the original release of a pattern. There are very few very specific exceptions. Also, in the GetFormFromFile example mentioned above, typically only the original MA is configured for cases around id compression. The typical user has no idea whether the …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
