01Introduction and Explanation

"Everyone has a name"

Real Names automatically assigns anonymous NPCs a very friendly name.

This is an SSE conversion and update of the original real names (which were an update to the Jaxonz Real Names) which provides identities for other generic residents of Skyrim. Ever wonder what kind of Whiterun Guard you see at Bannered Mane every night, and his sadness? Stop thinking about it! With this mod, almost every NPC is given a decidedly friendly nickname based on their gender and race. Even some monsters, like dragons, got their own names! It does all this in a lightweight, clean way that's highly configurable to your own personal preferences.

02 MCM options and configuration

This version of Real Names swaps the .INI configuration method for massively extended MCM. Therefore, the .INI file no longer exists and the jaxonzconsoleplugin is not required to use this mod.

Stranger Mode: Optionally prevent automatic renaming of NPCs until the player interacts with them directly (e.g. in conversation).

There are several options for determining how the generated names prioritize titles and surnames over Epithets.

Allows disabling renaming of monsters and/or dead NPCs.

Each game has independent options that can be adjusted.

Allows NPCs to be assigned a name that is not typical of their Race. This is disabled for all races by default, but it's not unheard of: Brand-Shei are dark elves raised by the Argonians, and Lucien Lachance is an empire (albeit with a very Breton name).

An option for Dark Elves allows them to get traditional Ashlander names.

Khajiit's options allow configuration of tribute preparation and sufficient.

Nords' option allows enabling patronymic/matronymic names.

Orcs options allow configuring Clan name prefix.

Easy access and intuitive UI for modifying lists used to generate random names. 56 lists, each containing 378 editable entries.

An exception method that prevents named NPCs from being renamed accidentally.

03Requirements and installation

Real name requires SKSE and SKYUI

To install, simply extract the files to the Data folder.

You can uninstall at any time by deleting the mod files, as this mod does not attach scripts to objects and does not run all the time.

Please note: any NPCs that receive names from this mod will retain their names even after uninstalling. No, there is no easy way to undo the changes made by this mod. This is a limitation created by the mod's lightweight implementation.

04Known issues

Real Names is fully compatible with DLC and most mods as it does not change any pre-existing records or scripts. It will rename NPCs appropriately as long as they are the correct race and meet the search criteria. Real Names Really the only thing that changes is the NPC's display name. That being said, there are still some mods that don't match the real names.

Mods that turn generic NPCs into followers (such as Halls of Heaven) don't like to be renamed to NPCs. Talking to an NPC results in the loss of dialogue options (and therefore the loss of command ability). If this happens, use the "Restore Name Key" to restore the NPC name to normal. NPCs will not be renamed again unless forced to.

Amazing follower tweaks that may or may not work with real names. In general, default followers should continue to function as expected, but forced followers or followers added by mods have been known to lose all interactivity. It is not recommended to use real names in AFT, but doing so may not cause CTD.

If using AFT or similar follower mods with real names, it is highly recommended that you also use the store name utility (found in the optional files on the download page).

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
