Tree LOD and object LOD generator for Skyrim
Installed a module that moves or replaces trees but they stay the same when in the distance, or you can't see the new farm house on top of the hill from the new shiny village overhaul? Then you need this tool.
Make sure you install TES5LODGen outside of the Program files folder, have write access, or run as administrator.
Run TES5LODGen.exe, wait for it to load the plugin, then select worldspaces to generate LODs (only Tamriel worldspace is selected by default) and click Generate. Wait for it to complete and you can observe the progress and check the message list for possible errors. Once finished, close the program manually.
Mod Organizer Users: Install TES5LODGen in a directory of your choice. Add TES5LODGen.exe to the MO executable list by clicking the gear button and browse for TES5LODGen.exe to populate the Binary field. Add a dedicated output directory by adding -o: "C:\TES5LODGenOutput" to the "Arguments" field. Once the LOD generation is complete copy/move the files from the dedicated output directory to the game data directory or the custom mod in the MO (recommended for load order management).
TES5LODGen has several options when building LODs, please read the technical details below to understand what they do. Normally
LOD in Skyrim
What works in LOD is far beyond what you see with the infamous uGridsToLoad setting. It can be increased to reduce object popping, and there are mods that can help stabilize this, but there are still memory/CPU limits and you can force the game to render the environment at full quality. Skyrim uses static LODs, which means that the LOD information is pre-built and does not change when mods modify objects in the game. Some mods include updated LOD files to address this issue, but they are generally incompatible with each other and require their own compatibility patches. These LOD files are generated using Creation Kit, which is a fairly complex process that is inaccessible to most users. TES5LODGen attempts to solve this problem by providing simple one-click automatic LOD file generation for the user's current load order, taking into account all mods with content visible from a distance.
Skyrim LOD is divided into 3 parts:
Terrain (Landscape) LOD - The shape of the distant landscape (Meshes\Terrain\<Worldspace>\<Worldspace>.*.*.*.BTR and Textures\Terrain\<Worldspace>\<Worldspace>.*.*.*.DDS where <Worldspace> is the name of the world space). These files are rarely updated because mods almost never change the terrain, or the changes are small and difficult to illustrate at a distance. Terrain LOD files are generated by OScape, TES5LODGen does not create them.
Object LOD - any static object except trees: houses, fortresses, rocks, mountain floors, castles, etc. (Meshes\Terrain\<Worldspace>\Objects\<Worldspace>.*.*.*.BTO and Textures\Terrain\<Worldspace>\Objects\*.DDS). BTR files for terrain LODs and BTOs for objects are actually large nif macro meshes that can be opened with NifScope (change their extension to nif or just associate the NifScope with the extension in your system). TES5LODGen generates BTO files from separate small lod meshes for each static object in the game that has them, attaching them to the statics in the Creation Kit when editing the static form.
Trees LOD - Overlay trees only (files in Meshes\Terrain\<Worldspace>\Trees\<Worldspace>.*.*.*.BTT and <Worldspace>.LST, and the individual atlas texture files Textures\Terrain\<Worldspace>\Trees\<Worldspace>TreeLod.dds). Unlike previous LODs, a BTT file is not a mesh, but just binary data that tells the game what type of tree it is, where it should be displayed, and a …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
