BSA unpacking

Mod isolation (1):

------------------

Mod isolation means that each mod is installed in its own directory outside of the actual data directory.

Through some magic MO the game (and any other 3rd party tool working on the data directory) is then displayed "virtually"

The data directory, which is a merger of the actual data directory and all mod directories.

This way, no files are overwritten when the mod is installed, and your data directory can remain in vanilla state.

You can simply change the "installation order" of your mods from the gui and deinstall, or temporarily deactivate one of them

without breaking other mods.

Profile (2):

-------------

With MO you can use different mods in different games. You can think of installed mods as a pool of mods, and for each profile you can set a set of them to be active. Disabled mods

Invisible to the game, as far as the game is concerned, they don't exist at all.

As an added gimmick, you can set a save game filter per profile so that when launched with that profile,

Only show saved games for the specified character in the game.

NOTE: This save game filter is experimental. It may cause the game to use already

Save games are created using save numbers, but as far as I know this has no negative effects.

BSA Priority (3):

-----------------

BSA files are archives that contain resources such as textures, meshes, sounds, scripts, etc.

All vanilla data exists in BSA, and by default Skyrim Creation Kit uses assets for mods in BSA. Traditionally you have no control over the priority between BSA and "loose" files (ie: assets that appear as a single file), BSA is always overwritten. So if you want to use files from BSA instead of files from the mod that are "loose" files, you have to manually find and delete the correct files.

MO fixes this problem and it's the only tool available. In the UI, check all the BSAs you want to load and you're good to go. Files from BSA have priority according to their installation order (left pane) -> they overwrite files of mods with lower priority, and do not overwrite files with higher priority. The limit with BSA enabled is approximately 8000)

Loading mechanism:

---------------

In order to work its magic, parts of the MO need to be active while the game is running. For this you can

Launch the game from the MO user interface. The GUI also provides the option to create a shortcut that will activate the MO

and run the game (or related tool) immediately.

However, this mechanism may not work in all settings! It’s worth noting the Steam version of Oblivion.

MO offers two alternatives:

  • Script Extender: If you have a script extender installed for your game (Oblivion, fout for Fallout 3, nvse for

New Vegas or skse for Skyrim), you can activate the Mod Organizer.

  • Proxy DLL: In this mode Mod Organizer will load the original dll and

Activate MO and replace the dll in the game with being part of the game. Currently I use steam_api.dll. Please note that I only tested in Skyrim and New Veg …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
