I started 3D modeling and texturing in mid-November 2018 and it has been the greatest journey of my life so far. After a lot of hard work, it's very satisfying to create something out of nothing and see it in your favorite game. In this section I'll describe how I struggled with this gate, maybe it'll be interesting to others who want to create their own mods.
TL;DR: Never overestimate yourself, take your time and pay attention to every detail. If you fail, try again and never give up.
After successfully publishing my Solitude door model, I thought how hard it would be to create another door. After a few doors, I got used to the process of creating them from scratch and bringing them into the game. I was wrong.
My learning curve was very steep during the first few months of modeling and texturing. When I created my first door (Glorious Solitude Door, link below) I failed numerous times at every step and there were many steps.
I probably rebuilt almost every part of the mesh in Blender five times because my rough topology was causing all kinds of problems while texturing it and bringing it into the game.
My second mod, Glorious Solitude Door Replacer, has become smoother and I'm getting faster and creating many doors in a short time.
A few weeks ago I found a cool reference picture of a door with lots of wooden circles. I immediately wanted to create it and take it to the sky.
I started working on it about two weeks ago and thought I would finish it in a few days.
However, I guess I'm overconfident in all of these skills which are still pretty uninteresting. I overestimated myself and made a lot of mistakes.
Soon there will be bad 3D topology and bad UV mapping and you will have to do the whole thing again.
I really wanted to make these little indentations in the round planks and failed over and over again, I almost gave up.
I tried really hard to sculpt but couldn't make it work. I tried probably 10 different things and nothing worked.
A professional might be able to complete this task in a few minutes, but when you're new to it, you'll be lost. The eleventh attempt finally worked.
I then struggled to bake the high poly onto the low poly, I'm still not sure what the problem is.
After finishing the texturing, I exported the mesh to Nifskope and noticed that the main part of the door was an object. Danmen's game is divided into two parts. Of course, I already knew this from all the other doors I'd made, but I just didn't pay enough attention.
So I had to go back, fix the mesh, unfold again, realign the texture, bake again etc...
Never give up, focus on your goals and keep moving forward :-)
Installation and compatibility
I highly recommend MO2 as a mod manager.
If you use SMIM, make sure my door is after SMIM and override it.
My door uses its own texture and does not interfere with any other texture mods.
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
