Function
Virtual file system:
The virtual file system is the core component of Kortex. It allows quick changes to installed mods without having to copy large amounts of data. With VFS, you can also keep your game folders clean, as if you didn't have any mods installed at all.
Advantages of VFS:
Since there are no files to move, the mod can be activated quickly.
There are no files lost due to new mods overwriting old ones - all files are still in their folders.
No original game files are lost because the original game's folder has not been changed.
Easier file conflict detection (not yet implemented).
Safe mod installation and uninstallation.
There are also some drawbacks, mainly the game's startup speed. Kortex uses its own Dokany 2 Beta-based VFS solution - KxVFS. Dokany is a kernel-mode filesystem driver, which means that every IO call (read/write operation) in that installer directory will be serviced by this driver, which requires constant user-to-kernel-to-user jumps. A user-mode solution (like the one used in Mod Organizer) or a completely different solution (symbolic links, hard links) will be faster. I spent a lot of time optimizing KxVFS. Going from a 10 minute startup time in Skyrim to a 1 minute startup time in v2.0a7, I hope you'll appreciate this.
Module management:
Kortex provides many standard features for a universal mod manager.
Drag and drop load order.
Instance and profile support.
Link files as mods from any folder on your system.
Collapsible separator for mod lists.
FOMod support (XML only).
KMP support (Kortex Mod package - native Mod package format).
Plug-in management:
Kortex provides plug-in management tools for all games it supports. Currently, plugin management for all Bethesda games includes:
Drag and drop load order.
Calculate correct load order index (including games with ESL support).
Sort using LOOT (integrated and as an external program) as well as older game bosses.
Import and export plugin lists.
Active plugin counter.
Plugin dependency scanning.
Package creator:
Kortex has built-in installer creation tools. This tool can be used to create fully functional installation packages in KMP and FOMod formats.
Configurator:
Configurator allows you to customize the parameters of your game (graphics, gameplay, etc.). The full-featured configurator currently only works with Skyrim, SkyrimSE and Fallout 4 (but SkyrimSE and Fallout use copies of Skyrim settings as they have reasonable compatibility). For games without predefined configuration information, the configurator will try to load all available options.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
