Overview

This mod places a 9-volume tome containing a complete version of Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda's Gylfaginning in the 5 major cities, as well as a rebirth chest containing a rebirth chest in the Weynon Stones. This version of Gylfaginning is based on an English translation by Rasmus B. Anderson called The Younger Edda (1879), which is available in the public domain. Anderson's translation has been edited to replace its Anglicized characters and place names, and in some cases words and phrases, with Old Norse names, spellings and terminology. This mod does not edit the navigation mesh, only minor edits to small vanilla objects to accommodate the placement of books on the bookshelf. It doesn't use any scripts, has no errors, and has been cleaned using TES5Edit.

BOOK location details

There are 5 in-game locations in the 9 tomes, one in each of Skyrim's major cities. These books are set into player ownership, and the player character is free to acquire them for any purpose, including selling to any in-game merchant who trades books. Books placed in the 5 major cities will not respawn once taken. To accommodate the loss or unexpected sale of these quantities, an additional set was placed in the rebirth chest at the Weynon Stones location. This chest will respawn in Skyrim at least every 30 days as long as the location is not re-entered during this time. Respawn has been playtested and determined to be available when revisiting Weynon Stones after a 30-day absence.

words, prose and letters

I would like to preface this section with a simple disclaimer: I am not a professional scholar of linguistics or Old Norse languages. My goal in making this mod was to create a text that represented Gylfaginning using Old Norse names in place of their English counterparts, while still reading in English. The text also includes some unique Old Norse words and phrases that have no direct English translations, please note the meanings that cannot be seen from the context. I read the stories multiple times from many different sources before I decided to make a mod that would work in Skyrim. I wanted to provide the full text, not just a summary, because I believe the story is the best unabridged and logical development as it was presented by Snorri in the Prose Edda in the early 13th century.

As mentioned above, Rasmus B. Anderson's Prose Edda translation - originally written by Snorri in the Old Norse - is used as the primary source text for the books in this mod. By comparing this text with translations of other English, Icelandic, and Old Norse language versions (even consulting digital online copies of surviving medieval manuscripts), I selected the English translation of the names, words, and spellings that best conveyed the Old Norse language within Anderson's framework. One must also take into account the game's limitations in displaying certain letters and accents unique to "Old Norse". If a word from Old Norse cannot be displayed correctly on the pages of the Skyrim book, Icelandic (or the closest approximation) is used. I apologize to any native Icelandic speakers offended by any clumsy efforts to achieve this.

The text consists of 17 chapters, distributed in 9 volumes, and the content is as follows:

roll. 1: Chapter 1 - Gefjun's Farming | Chapter 2 - Kilfi's Journey to Ásgarðr | Chapter 3 - The High God

Volume 2: Chapter 4 - Creation of the World | Chapter 5 - Creation (to be continued)

roll. 3: Chapter Six - Sir's First Work ~ The Golden Age | Cha …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
