About this mod Machine translation

Adds a lightweight and highly compatible cold weather recognition system to Skyrim.

Frostbite adds a simple and lightweight cold weather recognition system to Skyrim. When outside in the elements, or in a cold interior location, your body temperature gradually decreases. Being indoors or standing near a heat source such as a fire counteracts the cold temperatures and causes the body temperature to rise rapidly.

The goal of this mode is to give Skyrim's atmosphere a more immersive effect without introducing "survival" mini-games or preventing exploration. As always, mods should balance immersion with fun gameplay. Additionally, Frostbite is designed to be widely compatible with other mods and game styles.

how does this work

Freeze will be enabled by default but can be disabled in the provided MCM. When outdoors, the ambient temperature depends on the current weather and time of day. There are four possible temperatures: warm, neutral, cool and cold. When the sun is lower than the viewing angle, the temperature decreases one step. When the sun is higher than the viewing angle and the weather is pleasant, the temperature increases by one step. When actively swimming, the temperature will also drop one step lower.

Interior areas are essentially warm, but icy interiors are considered cold by default. If the inner area is not recognized as cold, or is an area added by another mod, the location or cell can be added to the list of recognized forms in Frostbite MCM.

Local heat sources, such as campfires, can increase ambient temperatures. Stews and soups also have a warming effect if you find yourself stuck in the elements without a fire. When consuming food that is not in the base game, you will be asked how Frostbite should classify it.

When the player's body temperature drops to a configurable level, attribute regeneration stops (although buffs like potions will work). When the player's body temperature drops to another configurable level, attributes are actively damaged every polling interval. The affected properties can be configured in the MCM, but the default values are stamina and magicka. Note that when health effects are enabled, it is possible to die if your body temperature is too low for too long.

Frostbite provides a widget that displays the current environment temperature and the player's current body temperature as a progress bar. The widget will flash when your body temperature falls below the regeneration or damage threshold. Widget temperature colors are cool blue, light blue is cool, white is neutral, and red is warm.

Although there are relatively few settings, they are all configurable in Frostbite MCM.

Install

Frostbite is safe to install in the game.

Using your favorite mod manager, simply install and enable the plugin. If the widget doesn't appear initially, quickly save and reload. In some cases, such as new games, the widget only appears on reload (I'm still trying to figure out why).

compatibility

Campfire's heat source and Hunterborn's warm food are compatible by default. Other food-added foods will be automatically recognized when eaten, and players can choose whether to heat them. This choice will be remembered for the remainder of the game.

Other new lands such as Bruma are also basically compatible. Outdoor areas function the same as in Skyrim, with cold areas added in MCM as needed.

FAQ

Q: Why only weather and time?

Answer: It is possible to track the player's position within an area and adjust the ambient temperature (Frostfall and Hypothermia use this method), the only reasonable way is to use world space coordinates. This greatly reduces broad compatibility, as any new lands will require patches. I did try zone tracking, which ultimately wasn't enough to justify negative compatibility.

Q: Is humidity tracked?

Answer: Partially. Rainy weather defaults to cold weather, and just like snowy weather, swimming will lower the ambient temperature. However, tracking saturation out of range …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
