About this mod Machine translation
Clean facial texture for handlers. I combined her face with the texture of a serious handler's face (thinner brows, different lips), softened details like skin pores, lightened the face slightly, and added a touch of pastel color. I think it makes her look better and less scary looking. This goes for all of her outfits.
If anyone is wondering why I don't swap files with other characters, it's because:
- The inner mouth lights up when exchanging with other major NPCs (such as the Serious Handler). I think a model/material edit is needed.
- Smaller NPCs do not have their own models, they use the player's facial model. Swapping the player's facial model onto the main NPC causes the face to implode.
Install:
Just unzip the files (with folders) to Steam\Steamapps\common\Monster Hunter World\
uninstall:
If you want to revert to the original file, just delete the mod file in NativePC\npc\npc02
Thanks to Vuze for the unpacking tool, and daemon1 for the TEX converter.
I haven't released a mod for a long time. If I messed up somewhere, please feel free to tell me.
Rough explanation of how I did it: (I forgot some exact details)
- Use this tool to convert TEX to DDS. Each texture seems to use a different type. The facial texture for this handler is DXT1 (BC1).
- Edit the texture in Photoshop.
- I think I exported using Intel Texture Works, without mipmap, and set to BC1_Unorm. If you have any issues, try both BC1 options.
- Open DDS in a hex editor and delete everything before "TEX". Save as .TEX extension.
- Open the original TEX file, copy everything before the second E1D1 (0x00000900), and overwrite and paste on the edited texture.
- In Photoshop, the texture may be misaligned (i.e. the right part appears on the left). Fix it manually.
- Use mipmap to export the rearranged DDS.
- Please note that the mipmap in the original seems to start at 0x00080110, which is slightly different from the Photoshop export.
- Copy and paste the extra data so that the original and edited versions match the same starting address of the mipmap.
- Copy and paste the mipmap data of the re-edited mipmap from the edited non-mipmap texture.
As you can see, this is a very "roundabout" solution. I'm sure I'll become obsolete when more tools are released (I can't make tools). Basically, there are some values in the original TEX header that don't seem to be inherited when exporting from Photoshop (i.e. the texture only appears solid white or black). I'm assuming that the mipmap index is also different. That's why you have to copy-paste these sections. There is also a slight difference in the address later in the file (probably mipmap).
You can tell the mipmap is broken if the texture looks weird/largely misaligned at long distances. There's also the issue that the textures can be slightly misaligned. Not sure why/how it happened. But I managed to fix them somehow.
I also want to change her eye color, but it is stored in the face model material (not the eye material) and I don't know which byte defines the color.
A cleaner face texture for the Handler. I combined her face with the Serious Handler's face texture (thinner eyebrows, different lips), softened the details such as skin pores, lightened the face slightly and added a little more soft color. I think it makes her look slightly better and less scary-looking. This should apply to all of her outfits.
If anyone's wondering why I didn't just swap files with other characters, it's because:
- Inner mouth becomes bright when swapping with other main NPCs (eg. Serious Handler). Needs model/material editing, I think.
- Lesser NPCs don't have their own models, they use the player face model. Swapping player face model onto main NPCs implodes the face.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
