Wasteland Animal Encyclopedia: Wendigo

As seen in Mutant Zoo: Life Finds a Way

"A creature of mysterious origin, the Wendigo is proven to have mutated from humans. No one knows exactly what causes an ordinary person to become one of these heinous deformities, but it has been proven that cannibalism plays a crucial role in the transformation to some extent. Wendigos have been known to occasionally live among feral ghouls, Possibly even commanding a horde of feral ghouls. This has led some to speculate that the Wendigo mutation may actually be a rare form of ghoulishness. Wendigos are found across much of the continental United States, and possibly beyond, but to be clear, their exact ecology is ultimately unknown due to the rarity and cryptic nature of the species.

The Wendigo is quite possibly the most terrifying mutant wandering the ruins of post-war America. They are tall, pale humanoids with sunken eyes and long, sharp claws. They have elongated limbs, protruding and sharp teeth, and enlarged skulls. They can run on two legs and glide very efficiently on all fours. Although they are completely feral, some Wendigos may adorn themselves with strange accessories. Examples of this include mutant or animal skulls, simple necklaces or jewelry, or old clothing. It's unclear why some Wendigos behave this way, but some hypothesize that their confused minds may be trying to express some dormant fragment of their humanity. As always, take such assumptions with a grain of salt.

Wendigos are a devastating force on the post-apocalyptic battlefield. Their earth-shattering screams can instantly knock out a full-grown human, while a single blow from their clawed, misshapen hands can have similarly violent results on the largest mutants. They are also very dexterous, able to briefly hide themselves in times of distress, and possess a powerful poison. Many also tend to be highly radioactive, meaning just being around living things is a safety hazard. Wendigos also regenerate from radiation exposure, similar to ghouls and the mythical wanamingo. All in all, Wendigos are a top contender for the title of most dangerous creature in the wasteland. Even if it doesn't win a fight, it can cause absolute hell when it swings.

What mod is this?

Monsters of the Waste: Wendigo is more of a mini-mod, a simple, standalone add-on that introduces a new creature to Fallout 4 as efficiently as possible. The Wasteland Monster Manual is designed as a series of mods that let you introduce new, lore-friendly creatures in simple, bite-sized chunks—with little to no impact on your gameplay or load order. There is no world space editing or addition, a single script injector task, and no additional systems. You'll get a creature, some new loot, a taxidermy recipe, and a creature cage. All designed to blend with the original Fallout 4. If you're interested in all the creatures found in Mutant Zoo, but don't want all the critters or all the extra bells and whistles, then Wasteland Animal Encyclopedia is for you!

What can I find in this mod?

Wendigos are terrifying mutant monsters that can give even the most disgraced Wastelanders nightmares! As seen in Fallout 76, wendigos are among the most dangerous creatures in the wasteland. You'll encounter them alongside the ghouls, as these otherworldly cannibalistic horrors seem to have some connection to the savages of the ruins. There are also a number of upgraded Vendigos variants - including Legendary - to be encountered as well. They should start appearing in the game around level 30.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
