Wasteland Animals: Vanamin Sphere

As seen in Mutant Zoo: Life Finds a Way

"Since the Great War, legends have spread across the wasteland—that aliens and otherworldly horrors lurk in the deepest parts—super-predators on par with the mighty Death Claws. In the post-apocalyptic decades, this urban legend has largely been known as "The Alien," some 40 Years ago, this urban legend finally got its name in Redding, California. As the story goes, locals were operating a gold mine called the Big Wanamingo Mine which was quite profitable for a while, until something big and particularly nasty decided to invade and infest the mine. Details here are scattered, but. Apparently slaves working in the mines (yes, unfortunately, this was one of the operations) were forced to detonate their explosives warehouse just to escape. Since then, reports of the exact appearance of the invading monster are scattered and inconsistent. - Those vague labels didn't get a clearer picture until someone actually came along with the mission to clean up the mine.

Now, at this point, the name "Wanamingo" has become a collective name for these creatures. The mines filled with these killing machines were somehow cleared (I assume using unparalleled firepower) by a man I could only manage to identify as "The Chosen One" - whatever that means. Regardless, in the aftermath, these Wanamingo bodies were scattered around the mine. Over the next few days, as the academics examined the carrion, they discovered that these details were the subject of FEV experiments. Not only that, but they also speculate that these wanamingos were actually created before the nuclear war. Some of these scientists hypothesize that they are designed to act as a kind of biological clock that prevents further reproduction after a certain generation. Unfortunately, this theory turned out to be as absurd in reality as it did on paper. Over the next few years, various West Coast experts made serious efforts to hunt down any remaining wanamingo.

This effort by my predecessors has provided some very useful insights into the strange alien Vanamin sphere. The anatomy of these creatures is understood to be vaguely reptilian, but similar to that of no extant animals before or after the war. Instead, they are giant bipeds with long tentacles instead of arms, and a huge, flytrap-like mouth lined with teeth - itself encased in a protective, nearly bulletproof shell. No eyes or sensory features are visible on wanamingos, but their senses and abilities are not hampered by anything suggestive of sensory deprivation. They are described as super aggressive and basically unintelligent. However, they are capable of a certain degree of herd logic—or perhaps even a hive mind.

Comparisons to another famous Wasteland Titan are obvious here. The Vanamin Sphere has a lot in common with the Deathclaw. It's even thought that they may be part of the same program that creates the Deathclaws. It's entirely possible that Vanamingos was a biological weapon designed by the military or the Enclave. The physicality of the wanamingo does resemble the devastating stuff in trench warfare, so I tend to agree with that sentiment. While almost none of these 40-plus years of research carries a final seal of conclusiveness, it sheds more light on these strange mutants than anything we have yet.

In recent years, wanamingo have become increasingly rare in the moors. Modern reports attribute many mutations, anatomical variations, and adaptations. For example, there are reports that "mutant varnamingos" are able to thrive outside their underground habitats - as long as visibility is low and radioactivity on land is high. Some are said to have completely lost their …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
