Ever wonder why you're supposed to be rebuilding society and dealing with minor settlement issues, while your soldiers are just out there drinking Nuka-Cola all day? Well, I (the original author Magic881, the same below) did it. Wake up, soldier, your general has some orders for you!

What does this Mod do?

Shortly after you become a general, a mission will begin that introduces you to "Master Sergeant Hartfield." Just make sure not to be in the Sanctuary or the mission won't trigger. Hartfield allows you to recruit squads or settlers and provides you with command holotapes.

Using this holotape, you can assign your squad to the Prestons' radiant mission (unlocking the settlement if none exists), defending the settlement (the Pip-Boy Defense mission), or searching for resources when there's nothing left.

By talking to the squad leader of any given squad, you can also order them to follow you, recruit new soldiers or promote them if one of them dies.

use

**Volunteer Squad:**

Once recruited, you can assign them to Radiance, Defend Settlement, or Scavenger missions. This will take some time as they will have to walk to the mission destination and hang out there for 3-6 game hours. If you try to pass the time by "wait" or "sleep" it may take longer (not intentional, that's just the way it is). If they have nothing to do, they will return to headquarters and sandbox there. They do not count towards the number of settlers and can be traded. If you want to know what they are doing now, check out SITREP. They're stationed at the Sanctuary if you haven't attacked the castle yet, and at The Castle if you've recaptured the castle. Resources for their search activities are stored in crates next to the workshop.

**Settlers:**

straightforward. Recruit them and assign them immediately to any settlement. Unlike vanilla Minutemen settlers, they can be transferred to any other settlement if you wish. Regular and Minutemen settlers generated by this mod do not count towards the population cap.

**Install**

Just download it via Vortex or manually drop it into your Fallout 4 Data folder. That's it.

**compatibility**

May be incompatible with any mods that edit Minutemen tasks. Should be used with any Militia replacement or overhaul unless they change the vanilla mission entry. However, I don't actually recommend any mods that reduce the number of Radiant missions, as you'll just end up sending your squad on scavenger missions.

**troubleshooting**

If you are using an alternative mod, be sure to use it before gathering your first squad. Otherwise their vanilla gear is already in their inventory. However, you can easily change it manually anyway.

When uninstalling a replacement mod, your squad/settlers may be without armor/weapons/faces, depending on what the replacement mod does. Using the "recycleactor" command on them, walking a long way back to them should fix the problem.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
