Update 3.1
90 snapshot locations added. Stairwells now support snapping, and every room has these snapping points around the ceiling for new spotlights. There are also more snap locations inside the atrium for regular wall sconces.
Change fluorescent ceiling lights to omnidirectional lights. Version B retains the spotlight but has a wider arch.
General file cleanup and housekeeping (renaming nodes, deleting unnecessary nodes).
What does this mod do?
Fixed three major lighting issues in the Vault-Tec Workshop DLC; brightness, lighting node position, and a bug causing lights to come on. It also adds connection points to the various Vault walls, so players can now snap lights into place without having to tediously try to line up each light, and resolves some minor quality of life issues (see Features).
Why did you create this mod?
I just want to create a Vault like Vault 81 - nothing more. Lighting was the first obvious problem, so I started working on those. All the values I used for the lights in this model were taken from the same lights that were already in the game. I also adjusted the mesh so that the lights actually cast from the correct locations.
In short, I created this mod to give myself lights just like the ones already in the Vault.
light
A lighting bug that caused lights to come on has been fixed.
The light now casts rays from the correct light source (see screenshot).
Lights now have the same values as those in existing vaults, such as the entrances to Vault 81 and Vault 88 (see screenshot).
The sconces are now aligned with the Vault walls, including the illuminated sign that will now be photographed above the doorway (currently 336 points, but this is an ongoing project).
Added a new rotatable spotlight.
power
Vault Power Conduit's range has doubled.
Bridges can now carry power like other safes.
Will this mod have compatibility issues with existing lighting mods?
This mod (as of 13-08-16) changes 10 lights and 123 walls in Vault-Tec Workshop. If those walls or lights are altered by other lighting patterns, then yes; there will be problems. However, this mod solves three problems that are solved individually, so you only need this mod. This mod also adds a lot of new meshes, although they can only be activated via mod plugins.
I've been reaching out to top mod authors to maintain compatibility with other mods. If you have compatibility issues, I'd like to hear about them in the comments section.
Will this mod cause performance issues?
Most lights have changed from omnidirectional lights to non-shaded spotlights. The non-shadow part is important because shadow casting lights are hardware intensive and are not yet used in this mod. However, the lights are brighter, so they may cause problems if overused, although I haven't experienced any issues (on my six-year-old PC).
Optional version of this mod (B&C) adds shadow lights and lens flares. They are more hardware intensive than vanilla lighting. I added them by request, they are not recommended for low end computers.
How do I install this mod?
You can use the Mod Manager, which is easy, or - if you're like me - you can extract the files manually; both the Meshes folder and the Vault-Tec Workshop overhaul plugin files go into your Data folder. Then just activate the mod in the game.
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
