Ultimate Hacker (Updated)
Hacking is "soft" gated. The default MCM settings make mini-games difficult without perks. Even with the perk, you need to use deductions, dud clears, and reset attempts. You will be punished for resetting the mini-game now. Terminal password count, lock time, number of guesses and mini-game reset mechanism can be customized. Requires F4SE and MCM.

Version 5.0
Bugfix: Fixed adding 5 guesses from MCM. A null reference in the condition causes it to fail.
Feature Change: Removed Robco Patcher files for Mentats and made hard record edits for Mentats chemicals. This is to ensure compatibility with RobCo Patcher NG, which crashes on ingestible patches
Feature Change: Ultimate Hack initializes at game start. This is to maximize compatibility with games that do not use the original MQ102.

Detailed description
By default, this mod sets up your character to be terrible at hacking. You can try to hack a computer at any level without the Perk, but you'll likely fail (5% chance of success, slightly higher if you remove duds).

Without the Perk, you only have to guess once and 20 possible passwords are displayed on the terminal. Intelligence no longer affects the number of possible passwords.
Perk and password number:
With Hacker (Level 1) you get one more guess and fewer passwords are displayed on all lock levels.
Newbie terminals now require far fewer skills.
Novice lock has 7 codes
Advanced lock has 15 codes
Expert Lock has 18 codes
The master lock has 19 combinations
With Hacker (Level 2) you get one more guess and fewer passwords displayed on all lock levels.
Advanced terminals now require far fewer skills.
Novice lock has 6 codes
Advanced lock has 10 codes
Expert Lock has 16 codes
The master lock has 18 combinations
With Hacker (Level 3) you get one more guess and fewer passwords are displayed on all lock levels.
Expert terminals now require far fewer skills.
Newbie lock has 5 codes
Advanced lock has 8 codes
Expert Lock has 12 codes
The master lock has 17 combinations
With Hacker (Level 4), lockout time is reduced by 98% and fewer passwords are displayed across all lock levels.
Now, having the main terminal unencrypted requires far less skills.
Novice lock has 4 codes
Advanced lock has 6 codes
Expert Lock has 8 codes
The master lock has 10 codes
Terminal security detection:
This is a new hacking mechanism (enabled by default). You will now be punished for resetting the hacking minigame (start hacking, leave the terminal, activate the terminal again to reset the minigame). When you reset the mini-game, the terminal will begin to detect that you are hacking it and implement security features. You will have to wait to get around them.
Hacking privileges help reduce the time required to bypass this feature.
Resetting the mini-game 3 times will temporarily lock you out of the terminal.
Base wait time is 60 seconds
New Hacker: 30 seconds
Advanced Hacker: 15 seconds
Expert Hacker: 10 seconds
Master Hacker: 5 seconds
Base game record changed::
- Hacker Perk (Remove Gating)
- Tutorial message on how long you are locked out (for consistency)
- Insufficient skills to unencrypt terminal conversation conditions (for consistency)
- Close to Metal Perk (Nick Valentine’s companion talent; increases the number of guesses and reduces lock time by 98%) (
If you access the Novice Terminal without the Perk, there is a new dialog (the same dialog as in vanilla when trying to unencrypt the M …
Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions
- Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
- There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
- Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
- Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.
Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
