Skin Tone - A unique skin overlay for each NPC

by DuduPhudu·v0.1.6·Updated 2026-10-08

Each NPC will have their own skin covering when they first meet: tattoos, scars, moles, dirt, etc., chosen based on their original identity (raiders have tattoos, settlers are mostly ordinary). There are 699 overlays drawn for it, an in-game window to hand-select the appearance, and a more lightweight alternative to the random overlay frame.

In Fallout 4, almost everyone has the same clean, blank skin. "Color" gives each NPC a unique appearance: tattoos, scars, moles, dirt, etc., which are all chosen by them. The raiders have tattoos and scars, the settlers are mostly ordinary.

In short, what you get

Each NPC will have a skin overlay when you first meet them, and will retain: tattoos, scars, moles, freckles, body hair, bruises, and dirt.

The look is great for individuals: there are 22 groups divided by faction and location (Raiders, Brotherhood, Diamond City, Good Neighbors, Peasants, etc.), each with their own style.

59 famous characters each have different appearances in the story: Kate, Piper, Dance, Fahrenheit, etc.

There is a window within the game to manually select overlays for anyone or yourself to use and preview them in real time.

What you need: F4SE, runtime database, LooksMenu and MCM. Overlay packs are optional: Complexion comes with 706 of its own paints.

Game version: Applicable to "Fallout 4" 1.10.163 (old console), 1.10.984 (next generation) and 1.11.x (Anniversary Edition). The runtime database must be installed for every version (including older consoles): it must be installed from its page (108394) and attached with your game version file, otherwise Complexion.dll will not load.

Supported bodies: CBBE or CBBE 3BBB for women, any BodySlide preset (shape changes, UV map does not); regular male body for men, or BodyTalk. The original female body is not supported: its UV map is different from CBBE, so the overlay falls in the wrong place (scattered rectangles and outlines).

The process is: install with Vortex or MO2, load the save file, and then meet new friends. Using random overlay frames? Read Migrating from Random Overlay Frames below first: You can keep it.

What it is, Complexion is a replacement for Random Overlay Framework. It uses LooksMenu's overlays, which is also the system used by the tattoo and skin detailing packages, and decides for each person which overlays they get. It's decided once when everyone first meets each other, and that look stays. There is no continuous scanning in the background.

Each person can have up to six stacks on their body. Each person has a style. No three pieces are the same. You cannot get two tattoos on the same spot. The faction emblem can only be on your own person. Pieces that ruin the backstory (superheroes, authentic brands) and low quality pieces are never given out.

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
