Updated on March 22:

Version 5.2.1

The archivist forgot to pick up the materials for restoration

Version 5.2

Rebuilt all bunker NIFs to fix crash issues.

Version 5.1 updated on March 18th:

5.1. Should resolve the third bunker crash issue.

Updated on March 17, 2026:

After the 5.0 update, all buildable fortifications have been organized into their own beautiful menus instead of all being lumped together into defense zones. Menus are added via script injection.

Placement patches have been fixed/changed. For example, placing wood will produce a corresponding wood placement sound.

*As shown in the picture, it is still an old thing. The famous sandbag fortifications usually have no sense of existence, but they are still effective when defending against settlement raids (especially the volunteer castle defense battle, which is passable simply as decoration.*

There is a surprising lack of fortifications in the base game, with only 2 small guard towers, and I (the original author, Nutulator, the same below) feel that more should be added. Over the course of 4 updates/installs we've added 51 buildable defenses, from bunkers to sandbag barriers, trenches and many other things.

architecture

Trenches - Short, Long, Fortified and Corner Trenches - 5 captureable trenches that you can use to fortify your settlement. Build one or two for decent protection, or go all out and build a trench system.

Bunkers - Concrete bunkers used to build strongholds throughout the Commonwealth. Available in different sizes and designs for every situation.

Heavy Machine Gun Bunker - Another stronghold structure with a unique armor pack add-on for increased protection.

Sandbag Cover - A stack of snap-on sandbags and a "post" used to reinforce any area. Works well with the trenches.

Dragon's Teeth - You may have seen these barriers in pictures of the Siegfried Line, they are designed to stop vehicles or direct them into the kill zone. Great for stopping mechanized troops in Power Armor. There are 3 teeth to choose from, each with a different height and slightly different design.

Barbed Wire Fences and Barricades - 3 Fences, 3 Barricades, Czech Hedgehogs (wood and metal), Pickets - Fences and log structures wrapped in barbed wire stop enemies from advancing any further and can be used to dig them into kill zones.

Quonset cabin - medium sized cabin made of corrugated galvanized steel. It can become living quarters in different areas of the wasteland. Thanks to Ethreon for providing the mesh.

Watchtower - Survey the area and watch out for enemy skirmishers from this fortified position.

Temporary defensive positions - unlike a nuclear war where 200 years later you would have an effective defense industry. Improvise a picnic table, dig a foxhole, or stack some sandbags—these locations are built from a combination of the sturdiest materials found around.

Field Command - A camouflaged location with plenty of room for a table and weapons crates to plan your attacks.

Tents - Sandbag reinforced tents.

Lightweight Sandbag Post - A less protective sandbag and wood structure suitable for checkpoints.

Heavy Sandbag Column - A heavily guarded version of the Light Column; provides good cover in hot zones.

Camouflaged Outpost - A camouflaged wooden outpost suitable for overlooking an area of forest into which it can blend.

Defensive Position - Two sandbag mounds provide moderate cover for one man.

Camouflage Nets - Three camouflage nets that provide cover for defensive positions, turrets, and artillery howitzers.

Barriers - Inspired by Hesco Barriers, these wood-shelled and earth-filled cubes are ideal for use w …

Install & use Install: follow the bundled instructions

  1. Unzip the archive from playbuff and read the bundled readme / instructions first.
  2. There is no universal mod manager for this game: some mods replace game files directly, some go into a game-specific Mods folder, and some need a game-specific community loader or tool first — follow the bundled readme.
  3. Place the files exactly as the readme says; mods with listed dependencies need those installed too.
  4. Launch the game to confirm it loaded; some games require enabling mods in settings or an in-game mod menu.

Install locations vary a lot between games and mods — the bundled readme is the most reliable guide.
